RAVENA Ruth Bleezarde Babcock, entered into eternal rest with her family by her side Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at her resident. She was born on March 17, 1918 in Ravena where she lived all her life and was actively involved in many aspects of the community. Ruth graduated from Ravena High School, where she was known for her basketball skills, in 1936, received her degree in child development from Cobleskill College and continued on at Simmons School of Embalming attaining her New York State Funeral Directors License in 1941 becoming one of the few women to hold that position. Ruth and her late husband George M. Babcock, owned and operated the Babcock Funeral Home that continues on today encompassing four generations. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Congregational Christian Church in Ravena where she served over the years in the choir, Sunday school and many additional activities of the church. Her memberships also included the Senior Projects of Ravena, Awenke Yacht Club, Mohawk-Hudson Power Squadron, Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary of the Ravena Hose Co., Albany-Rensselaer Funeral Directors Association and the New York State Funeral Directors Association. Ruth has been an Avon representative for over 40 years without interruption and was a pioneer of the Stars Program serving the first graders at P.B. Coeymans School. Survivors include her six loving children, Dennis G. (Diane) Babcock of Enfield, Conn., Janice Ruth (Eugene) Winters of Cranberry Township, Pa., Sharon B. D'Ambrosio, Gail B. (Peter) Bullock, Marcia Jean (Rudy) Blakesley and George W. (Carol) Babcock, all of Ravena; her sister, Marion Roberts of Ravena; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband George, Ruth was predeceased by five brothers, Warren, Elmer, George, William and Robert Bleezarde and two sisters, Mildred and Emma Bleezarde. Ruth has touched many lives in the community over the years through her natural ability to reach out to people in need and as a result enriched the lives of many too numerous to count. Funeral services will be held 10:00 Saturday morning, February 19, at the Congregational Christian Church, Ravena with Rev. Steven J. Simpson officiating. Burial will take place in the spring. Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. Next to her family, Ruth's church was a very important part of her life.
