Joe and I made a Med Cruise together in Air Wing 10 aboard USS Shangri La back in the early '60s. He was CO of VF-62 and I was in VA-46 at the time. Later, We later worked at Jacksonville University together; he as VP for Operations and I as Professor of Aeronautics in the aviation degree program. Joe was a good friend and a superb aviator.
I attended his memorial service today as one of the honorary pallbearers representing the Golden Eagles but missed the opportunity to sign the guest book. I do offer my sincerest condolences. We'll certainly miss Joe but he's in a better place.

Admiral "Old Joe" will be greatly missed. He was a gentleman from deep in heart, always sunny. He was from Alabama and loved Eufaula.
I will never forget his "unusual " sense of humor, his charming lovely smile, his sharp blue eyes and his comical pronunciation of my name.
My deepest condolences to Chuck,Randolph,Michelle and his 4 grand children for whom he was so very proud of.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing. He was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. March 10th is also the tenth anniversary of Tag's passing. I know the two of them are swapping great war stories. Our family extends our most heartfelt sympathy in this most difficult time.
With love,

A passage from his 1945 Naval Academy year book, (although the class graduated in 1944). " This tall, handsome boy with the 4.0 smile from deep in the heart of sunny Alabama one day set out to follow in the footsteps of his brother and found that they led him inside the cold, bleak walls of the Naval Academy. "Chuck's" abilities were many and varied, and he tried his hand with no little success at crew, football, boxing, and wrestling. Academics never bothered him, and the Exec department even saw fit to adorn his blue service with three well- deserved stripes. Potentially a great lover, Chuck preferred a couple of good movies and a few hours of extra sleep to a drag, and besides, it was a much more economical way of spending a weekend. Crew 4, Battalion Football 4, Football 3"
