Caldwell Haynes Obituary

HAYNES Caldwell Leyden Haynes Hank, 72, went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2014. His wife Billie of 45 years was by his side until the very end. Hank was born and raised in Jacksonville and has two sisters, Jayne Haynes and Margo Bliss. After spending his grade school years at Ortega Elementary, Hank attended The Bolles School and then transferred to Lee High School, where he served as the Senior Class Vice President. Upon graduating from Lee in 1959, Hank went on to The University of the South - Sewanee, majoring in Business and Economics. Hank found his passion in wrestling there and became the Southeastern Conference Wrestling Champion. He was recently inducted into the University's prestigious Athletic Hall of Fame. Hank loved his country and upon graduating from Sewanee, proudly served in the United States Navy. He attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an ensign in 1964. He served three years on a destroyer, deploying to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War. He retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in 1967. After his military service, Hank went into the family insurance business. He was President of Haynes, Peters, and Bond Company, founded by his great-grandfather in 1877, making it the oldest insurance agency in Florida. For the past 45 years, Hank dedicated himself to the Jacksonville community. He is Past Chairman of the Ronald McDonald House, Past Chairman of Daniel, and Past President of The Meninak Club of Jacksonville. He was the Chairman of St. Vincent's Foundation's Riverside Ambassadors Board and served on various hospital committees. In 1993, he was Chairman of The Players Championship golf tournament. Hank's church, St. Mark's Episcopal, was a huge part of his life, and he served as the Church's Senior Warden on numerous occasions and Member of the Vestry. Hank is survived by his wife Billie Kirby Haynes and his daughters Leyden Haynes Hane (John Hane) and Lauren Zoie Haynes Morales (Michael Morales) as well as five grandchildren: John Caldwell Hane, Frances Cauthen Hane, William Leyden Morales, Sarah Lane Morales and Chandler Zhi Di Morales. Hank will be remembered for his sense of humor, big heart, generosity, and tireless community service. He truly was a friend to everyone. Funeral services will be held on January 17, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his grandson's school, Harvest Community School (2360 St. John's Bluff Road South #1, Jacksonville, FL 32246). I was so sad today to hear that my special friend had passed. Hank always had a smile and a hug for me whenever he'd come to the shop to see us. He will be truly missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. May he rest in peace and forever be in our hearts.

Billie, I am so sorry to find out we lost Hank. I finally got in touch with Claudette. It hurt me deeply that I didn't find out in time to attend the funeral. Hank was special to me as he was to so many. A truly wonderful man, my words seem so shallow to express my feelings. I can say it was a honor for him to call me his friend. Tonia and I will pray for God to hold you and your family close and give you peace that passes all understanding.

Dear Billie and family,
I was so distressed to read about Hank. I didn't realize he was sick. About 2 or so months ago, Hank called me for Mike Carter's phone number. He was going fishing and was going to be near where Mike lives. He sounded wonderful. I am sure you have heard all the accolades, but he was very special. My love and prayers go out to you and the girls and their families during this time of great loss.

I have known Hank as a friend and competitor for over 30 years. I can say he was a fair and just man in all his professional dealings. I am very sorry to hear of his passings and can only offer my condolences. I always enjoyed his company and wonderful smile. Hank will be missed by all who knew him.

To Billie and all Hank's family, my sincere condolences on what I realise is a grievous loss. My enduring image of Hank from Lee High School, is that smile of his, so quick to appear upon meeting, radiating such warmth, and a rare degree of direct and personal engagement with one. A few years ago we happened to meet in Jacksonville - probably the first time in 45 years - and he was still as I remembered - a very fine and good and admirable man. I had been praying for him since I learned of his illness, and I offered Mass for him on Sunday 19th January at Christ Church, Sayers Common. May he rest in peace. Be sure, too, of my prayers for you all in your bereavement.

Dear Haynes family, Hank and I were classmates in the class of 1959 at Lee High School. His presence and wonderful personality helped make our class a rememberance of good times, and lasting memories. May God's grace through our Savior Jesus Christ comfort and sustain you through this time of grief.

Hank was like a beacon in the sea of fledgling students -- a true guide to what was good and wholesome for the lot of us! He was admired as a friend and a leader and will always occupy a place in the hearts of those whose path he crossed.

Hank lived his life well & may only now understand how greatly he was admired & respected. My father enjoyed relating a story about Hank at an Ortega Halloween Carnival, circa '52. From some distance, my dad saw a much bigger kid giving Hank a hard time. Before he could intervene, Hank had the big kid on the ground & my dad had to rescue him. Hank's kindness & enthusiasm for life will be missed by all who knew him for a very long time. "Well done, good & faithful servant. Go now to your rest. Come now & share the joy..."

Can't say we were close friends but Hank was one of my favorite people. It's tough to be a "new kid" at Lee High School but Hank made it easy. With a ready smile and sincere welcome he made me feel right at home. He was a true leader and will be truly missed. May God bless and comfort his family in their loss.

"Hank" Haynes, what a guy....manager of a historic undefeated Sewanee football team and a job well done. "Hank" the championship wrestler who started wrestling after the coach informed him that Sewanee had a wrestling team and said "be there!". "Hank" the Brother to all the Sewanee Phis. "Hank" an inspiration to all who knew him and a true Christian man...and we never heard a complaint from him about anything......gone, but not forgotten. He was our friend, frat brother, classmate, older brother of our good buddy, Jayne. We will miss him. Rest in Peace Dear Friend.

Ah Billie, Doug wrote me to tell me that hank had died. At this great distance I still gasped and am feeling his absence as never before. Memories of his presence in all my Jacksonville life flood back! he was the most generous, fun, attention paying guy always! He met me in the back of st.marks when I went to dad's funeral and held me while I finally was able to cry. I cannot yet comprehend the space his being has left behind...it is huge! I will carry you all in my thoughts and only hope a shared grief can be eased even for a minute. There are so many of us out here sorely effected by his passing.

Hank was the nicest man I ever met. He was my canoe instructor at Camp Merrie Wood, and always remembered me years later. Whether he was bagging groceries at Publix for a charity or ringing the bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army, he was always giving to others.
His smile will always be in my heart, as I know it will be for you, Billie, Margot and Jayne. Please know that there are many who will also miss him dearly,

Hank was a great guy and a man that always had time to help others. He kept my sisters and I insured when we made a habit of bad driving and was a wonderful resource to my family. When we moved to McGirts Blvd when I was very young Hank and sister Jayne were probably the first people I met. They lived about a block away and we spent many many hours together playing sports and doing whatever kids did. We had a great life and Hank was one of the greatest guys you'd ever want to meet. Only the best memories. Always "up". Very, very sorry and the best to you, Billie.

January 16, 2014

Billie and family, so sorry to have learned the news about my buddy Hank. The good thing though, I'm confident that he is in his well deserved place in heaven. Hank was born gifted with all the tools for success and he shared that by giving to so many. When we were kids and there was a contest that Hank was involved the rest of us were going for second place . If I had to choose one person for my boys to pattern themselves after , it would have been Hank. I know GOD will be with you through this time.

I will miss Hank Haynes. His warm smile and generous spirit was always a welcome sight.

The ministry I was most connected to with Hank was FCA. It is without a doubt that the Northeast Florida FCA would not be what it is today without Hank's leadership and wisdom.

Hank was so gracious to me when I reappeared at his office with a unique ministry I had started. Hank truly believed in what I was doing and supported us for several years. He never gave it a second thought that I had disappeared from his radar for 15 years.

I will miss my friend and mentor. My prayers of comfort and peace are with his family and his many many friends.

Hank waa a friend with everyone he met. We grew up knowing each other from Ortega Elementary forward. We played baseball on the Ortega Midgets baseball team under Mr. Kenyon. He was our right fielder and his name given to him by me was "Hammerin Hank."

We continued our friendship forward from St. Mark's Episcopal as acolytes, and on to Lee High School where he was the manager of our football team. He was always helpful to all of the football players and to Coach Dingman.

We stayed in contact through the years with Hank's agency handling our insurance matters for my law firms. He was always available to discuss those matters.

All can remember Hank at the TPC in his red jacket.

To Hank's family in friends we will all

miss him but the world is a better place because he was here.

Hank stood for a gentleness and core sweetness rarely seen in anyone especially a man who loves to wrestle. He wrote the workers comp and liability insurance for my small Adult Day Care when every other insurance agency denied us! Hank stepped up and was so gracious through the years.
He was just the dearest human being.
RIP ole wrestler! Thank you for your compassion.
