Edward James Whitehead Obituary
Edward James Whitehead, 81, of Atlantic Beach, Florida passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 31, 2018. He was born in Arlington, Georgia on May 14, 1937. He was the second child of Charlie and Johnnie Bell Whitehead. He grew up in St. Petersburg, FL and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 18. During his military career he traveled the globe and his last three duty stations were in Bermuda, Australia and Mayport, Florida. He retired after 21 years of dedicated and faithful service as the Chief Petty Officer (CPO) of the Mayport Commissary Store. His second career was with the Keebler Company. He started out delivering cookies throughout the Southeast and retired as the Assistant Distribution Center Manager after 19 years of service. He was widely known as a Keebler Elf as he provided cookies for his family and friends (especially his kids' friends) and each year for his church's Vacation Bible Schools during the summer. His final career was as the Warehouse Manager for Discover Tec and Elite Tec. He retired in 2008.
Ed loved gardening and cheering for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Florida Gators and the Tampa Bay Rays. He and his youngest son were Jacksonville Jaguar season ticketholders and they never missed a game. He was a man of faith and dedicated his retirement years to serving at First Baptist Church of Atlantic Beach, Florida. He was a deacon and served as Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. When you drove by the church on Friday mornings you would see him on the riding lawnmower. He was also a faithful member of The Gideons International spreading the Good News.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents and his brother John Wesley Whitehead. He is survived by his sister Laura Bell Wilson of Ft. Pierce, Florida; his brother Freddie Lee (Delores)Whitehead of St. Petersburg, FL; his former spouse Ellen W. Whitehead of Atlantic Beach, FL; his favorite daughter Patience (Armando) Brindis of Jacksonville, FL; his namesake Edward J. Whitehead Jr. of Neptune Beach, FL; his youngest son (the Golden Child) Barakan (Brock) Whitehead; his heart and soul granddaughter, Elaina C. Brindis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, June 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Atlantic Beach, 1050 Mayport Road, Atlantic Beach FL 32233.
Ed's homegoing service will be on Thursday, June 14 at 11:00 A.M. officiated by Reverend Greg Crocker at the First Baptist Church of Atlantic Beach, 1050 Mayport Road, Atlantic Beach Florida 32233. Lunch will be served immediately following the service.
