BELL JASON J BELL, 51, of Jacksonville, Florida, died on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. He was born to Alan Quinn Bell and Margaret Ann Bell in Baltimore, Maryland on December 13, 1964. He grew up in the Holiday Hill and Deerwood neighborhoods, and married the love of his life, Donna (Burk) Bell, in Jacksonville over 27 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his two children, Andrew J. Bell (26) and Genevieve Bell (24); his parents, Alan Quinn Bell and Margaret Ann Bell; his siblings, Jeffrey Jon Bell, Cheryl Bell (Robert) Thompson, and James Justin (Lisa) Bell. Jason graduated from Bishop Kenny High School in 1982, and received his BS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida in 1986. He had a distinguished career designing diagnostics and radar systems for the Navy. He also operated his own software design company. Jason had an exceptional mind and many diverse talents. He could fix an old lawn mower or develop complex software. He really enjoyed a lively debate. He was curious about the essence of each thing and idea he encountered. He loved to travel and he was awed by nature, whether it was the stars above or the woods in his own backyard. He valued authenticity and despised any form of pretension. Most of all, Jason was a devoted husband, father and son, with unwavering loyalty to the many people he loved. Flowers or memorial donations are welcomed. Jason's favorite charities are Catholic Relief Services, Metro Kids Konnection, Operation New Hope, and City Rescue Mission. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, in Mandarin Presbyterian Church, 11844 Mandarin Road, Jacksonville, FL 32223, followed by interment in Mandarin Cemetery. There will be a reception for all friends and family immediately afterwards at the Bell Family Home, 980 Fruit Cove Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32259. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin 11801 San Jose Blvd Jacksonville FL 32223. www.hgmandarin.com 904-288-0025

I am sorry for your family's loss.
I was on a temporary detail at NAS JAX this summer and I met Jason when I first got on base. He treated me like an old friend and showed me around and described how things work. I appreciated his kindness and he seemed like a great and intelligent person.
Im grateful that I met him.
Sincerely, Lonnie

I am so sad that Jason has left us so early. I was privileged to have known him since I started work at the Naval Aviation Depot in June 1987. When we carpooled together for a couple of years, I got to hang out with him after work most days of the week and talk about science and engineering, think of inventions, and tinker with his audio capture and digital processing hardware/software project. After comparing notes about classes at UF (Jason graduated the semester before me), we realized that we had a couple of classes together, although we did not yet know each other). Jason loved to be intellectually challenged in conversation, on any subject. He once wrote lyrics to a song I was developing on guitar and actually recorded. He then let me borrow a manila folder full of dozens of his hand written song lyrics/poems that he had been collecting from his school days through then (about 1990). Many of the songs seemed to be about dreaming - very esoteric, deeply insightful and invoking strong imagery. It was an honor to get to know Donna when they started dating and then of course when/since they got married and our kids were small. In later/more recent years, I enjoyed occasionally going out to lunch with Jason at work with some of our other coworkers and stopping by his office for some friendly engineering advice. Above all, I always appreciated his pleasant demeanor and very comical wit/sense of humor. Here are the lyrics to one of Jason's songs about dreaming (I wrote the music in 1990 and still play/sing it occasionally at home, but never recorded it........but I plan to soon):

The Horizon of Dreams

The flat-lands meet the mountains
On the edge of the horizon
In the same way the conscious meets the subconscious on the horizon of dreams

I'm moving up stream to the foothills
Drifting out over the open window sills
Deep inside the images and actions bend
To the will of the dreamer
Impulses send me speeding toward the horizon
Toward the horizon of dreams

Drifting over a black fog
Images of horizon's highway
Focus to a shallow sharpness
The faces and people, joy

Images of life's highway
Draw the dreamer into darkness

I am so saddened to hear about Jason so unfair. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I've been privileged to work with many really smart and talented people - Jason was one of them. But what was outstanding about Jason was his willingness to share his knowledge in a non-condescending manner, and his sense of humor in spite of the absurdities of the job.
I'm glad to have known him and he will be missed.

This is hard for me to believe, I just spoke to Jason a couple days before the accident. Absolutely one of the smartest men I knew, and it was a privilege to work with him. I will always remember that certain look he would get when I would ask if a certain function was possible, and I could see the program language running through his mind before he would answer with "yeah, we should be able to do that". Everything was possible even if improbable with Jason, and that is just one of the many things that his friends and family at NAVAIR and the U.S. Navy will sorely miss. Rest in peace my friend, you were taken way too soon.

Jason and I go way back to Deerwood, Bishop Kenny and UF. He convinced me to buy my first computer in 1980 , a TRS-80 (often called a trash 80) from Radio Shack and he taught me how to program. I could tell stories about the trouble we got in during high school and at UF but I am not sure the statute of limitations allows me. Jason was a great guy.

Jason and Donna were out here in California over a year ago and we had dinner in La Jolla. I am glad I got to see him.

My deepest condolences to his family.

Donna, Genevieve, and Andrew I saw Jason a few months ago and we talked for few hours. He talked about the family while he was talking about you he had such a wonderful smile on his face. He told me how everyone was doing and how great things where. His pride and love was so overwhelming to me. When we parted my thoughts where how wonderful to see a man who loved his family so much. His love for all of you shined through this thoughts he shared and that smile of his. He will be greatly missed. All my love for you and the family.

My thoughts are with Jason's family in this time of deepest loss. Working with Jason and sharing a friendship for many years, his absence will leave a hole that can't be filled.

Jason was a brilliant engineer, a lighthearted joker, an inveterate tinkerer with anything mechanical or electronic, a lover of adrenaline and excitement. Most importantly, he was a man with a deep and kind heart.

I'll miss our lunches where Jason could talk about anything with knowledge, argue a point without being unkind, laugh at himself and the world's vagaries.

I'll raise a glass and think of you often, my friend.
