Rhys Stanger Obituary

STANGER Rhys Lloyd Stanger, 80, of Amelia Island Plantation died early Sunday, November 17 at Shands-Jacksonville injuries suffered in a small airplane crash on October 31. Mr. Stanger, a former resident of Darien, CT, was a 1944 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. He received an MBA degree from New York university. During World War II, he was a B-24 bomber pilot, seeing action in Italy and Austria. He was President of The Geigerich Company, a real estate development company in Westport, CT. After settling in Amelia Island, Mr. Stanger became involved in Plantation activities, serving on the Board of the Fairway Oaks Association, the Club Board, and other committees. After the death of his first wife, June MacCallum Stanger, he became active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He helped with Making Strides for Cancer and the Man-to-Man programs. Mr. Stanger is survived by his wife, Leslie. He is also survived by his two daughters, Dr. Lis Cook (Dr. Russel) of Washington, NC and Nancy Stopher (Bob) of Louisville, KY; four grandsons: Rhys and David Cook, and Jim and David Stopher, and one granddaughter, Lynn Stopher. Funeral services will be held at the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel on Thursday, November 21 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel or the Fernandina chapter of the American Cancer Society. Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
