Stephen Smith Obituary

SMITH
1943-2018
Stephen Pinckney Smith III of Jacksonville died on July 4, 2018. He was born August 9, 1943 in Atlanta, GA to Stephen P. Smith, Jr. and Lois Evans Smith. Following the end of World War II, the Smith family returned to Jacksonville where Steve III lived for the remainder of his life. He graduated from DuPont Senior High School in 1961 and then attended Washington and Lee, graduating in 1965, graduating both magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in English. After college graduation, Steve received a scholarship to the University of Florida law school. During law school, he was selected to appear in the 1966-1967 Edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1968 and then served with the US Army in Korea, attaining the rank of Captain. After completing military service, Steve practiced law in Jacksonville for more than 40 years, many of those in partnership with his father, Steve Jr., and brother, Alex. Steve was a lifelong democrat, long-time member of the ACLU, ardent supporter of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, and a living legend of intellectual purity. He was also a voracious reader, writer of poetry and prose, and always could be counted on for a challenging point of view. Steve crossed over the river to rest beneath the shade of trees while enjoying his annual trip to the Suwannee River with family and friends. He is survived by his two sons, Christopher (Sara) and Morgan (Tammie), two brothers, Alex (Lynda) and Reggie, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and friends to remember his sharp intellect, dry wit and love of the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, and Florida Gators. In his own words, "Let there be no mourning; for I enjoyed my life; I lived a long time & was able to enjoy most of that time; so celebrate my life as I did & so celebrate your own. Most of you live too much for the future; enjoy a little now. " Paraphrasing from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, we can respond: If we do meet again, we shall smile; if not, then this parting was well made.

We met when you were 17 and I was just out of college and working at the Jacksonville Journal. I edited the weekly school page and you were the writer from Dupont High School. You could write rings around all the other kids and were so smart. I knew you would be a great success in life and you were. I'm so happy that we stayed in touch over the years. I will miss your quick wit, intelligence and quirkiness. I'm glad we shared the same political views for I'm sure you would have skewered me if I happened to be a right winger. I will miss your always entertaining emails and, most important, I will miss you.
