Woodrow Rufus Daniel Connors

CONNORS Woodrow Rufus Daniel Connors, 95, a former construction company owner and founder of the Jacksonville Woodworkers Club, died Friday, February 6, 2009. He was born March 4, 1913, the first of seven children to Archibald H. Connors and Eva May Haddock Connors. After graduating from Robert E. Lee Senior High School in 1930, Connors joined his father, Archibald, in the family construction business. He served for six years in the Florida National Guard during the 1930's. During World War Two he served as a construction supervisor at the rapidly expanding Naval Air Station, and built "PT boats" and "crash boats" for the Navy at Huckins Yacht Corporation. In the late Forties, father and son resumed business as Connors Construction Company and for the next 15 years built hundreds of residences in west Jacksonville in the Cedar Hills and Normandy sections of town. After his father's death in 1959, Connors partnered with his brother, Gerald, in the family business before retiring in 1978. A life long member of the Baptist Church, Connors joined the North Jacksonville Baptist Church in 1944 and was ordained a Deacon in 1948. He served in many responsible church offices over the years, from Sunday School teacher and department head to supervising construction of major church buildings and facilities. In late 1989, Connors gathered in his wood shop a small group of friends who loved woodworking to discuss forming a club. Connors was elected its first President and was an active member for over 15 years. In the late 1980's, Connors began building wooden crosses in his wood shop--giving them away to those wishing to display them as symbols of their faith. At the time of his death he had prepared over 20,000 crosses that, thanks to friends and the faithful, had been carried to the far corners of the world. Connors is survived by his wife of 72 years, Miriam Morris Connors and their three children: Captain Tracy D. Connors (Faith) of Gainesville, Florida; John David Connors (Joyce) of Jacksonville; and Eva Christine Connors of Jacksonville. He has four grandchildren-Karen C. Henson (Jeffrey) of Charlotte, NC, Miriam Connors-McCarns (Dean) of Richmond, VA, Clayton M. Connors (Stephanie) of New Orleans, and Jennifer C. Davies (Edward) of Middleburg--and eight great grand children. He is also survived by three sisters: Julia Cathey and Florence Dickie of Jacksonville and Lucille Ritchie of Oakland, CA. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 a.m - 10:30 a.m. at the North Jacksonville Baptist Church, 8531 North Main Street, Jacksonville, FL Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 10th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chris Coram officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Arrangements under the care and direction of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4747 Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206.
