WEBB Rear Admiral Carl Ray Webb, Jr. (Ret.) died of cancer at his home in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on August 29, 2012 surrounded by family. Carl was born in Shelby, NC on July 17, 1933 to Carl Ray Webb, Sr. and Virginia Hoyle Webb. Carl was predeceased by his parents and his only sibling Walter H. Webb, Sr. Carl graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1955 and was commissioned Ensign in the United States Navy that same year. He also received a Master of Science with Distinction in Logistics Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1968. His 33 year career in the US Navy Supply Corps included the following tours; Supply Officer on the USS CANISTEO; Supply Officer, Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron Six, Jacksonville, Florida; Supply Officer Naval Air Facility, Keflavik, Iceland; Supply Officer on the USS TACONIC; Branch Head of Stock Control, Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia, PA; Inventory Control Officer, NSD, Subic Bay, Philippines in support of Viet Nam combat forces; and Supply Readiness Officer reporting to Commander, Naval Air Force, Atlantic. He then reported as Supply Officer, PRECOMUNIT, USS NIMITZ, commissioning that ship and serving as her first Supply Officer. His next tour returned him to Philadelphia's Aviation Supply Office as Operations Officer. Carl was then assigned as Commanding Officer, Fleet Material Support Office, Mechanicsburg, PA. He then assumed duty as Deputy Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command for Plans, Policy, and Programs Development in Crystal City, VA. He then served as Assistant Commander of the same office, for Inventory and Systems Integrity. He was promoted to Vice Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command prior to reporting to his assignment as Director, Materiel Division, on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon, where he served until he retired in 1988. Rear Admiral Webb's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (3), the Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy E Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Carl is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Peggy Pearce Webb, children Dr. Louise Kendall Webb M.D. of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Kevin Wray Webb of Cheverly, MD, and Lawrence Keith Webb of Jacksonville, FL, as well as nephew Walter H Webb Jr and niece Lynne Ray Williams, both of Shelby, NC. Admiral Webb requested no services or formalities upon his death. If you wish, donations may be made to hospice or your local charity.
