PINNELL CDR Joseph Kent Pinnell, Sr.-USN Retired, 80, died Saturday, November 7, 2015 in Orange Park, FL. He leaves behind his wife, Maria G (Silva) Pinnell; daughter Judy (Pinnell) Schall, her husband Matt and grandson Logan; son Joseph Pinnell. Jr. and granddaughter Kristyna; stepson Pedro Daniel Silva, and his wife Sharon; grandchildren Nathaniel Silva and wife Abby, Samantha Lee and great-grandchildren Sophia & Ava; stepdaughter Terry Silva; stepdaughter Pat (Silva) Rush and husband Steve; and daughter Mildred (Pinnell) Fockele, husband Mark and granddaughter Emma; his sister Donna Larson; sister Judy (Pinnell) Ross and husband Jack; brother Rick Pinnell and wife Pat; and many close friends. Born in Des Moines Iowa in 1935, the son of Joseph Milton Pinnell and Bertha Marie (Kent) Pinnell, he grew up in Augusta GA. He graduated Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and a commission in the Supply Corps US Navy where he served for 26 years, retiring as a Commander in 1982 and Comptroller of NAS Pensacola. He was a member of Rotary International from 1974 to 1994 and awarded Paul Harris Fellow in 1981. He earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1974 and his Masters Degree in Systems Analysis in 1984. Joe began working for Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and they relocated to Orange Park FL. In 1997 they became very active members of St Catherine's Parish. He joined the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight from 2001-2002. In 2003 retired from NMCRS, but continued to volunteer weekly. He also volunteered with, and has served as President of St Vincent de Paul Society at St Catherine's Conference, and numerous other committees and events within the parish. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015, at 10:30 AM, immediately followed by Memorial Mass at 11:00 AM, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, 1649 Kingsley Ave, Orange Park, FL. Full military honors will be conferred. A luncheon reception will follow. A private burial will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery, on board NAS Pensacola at a later date.
