Joseph G. Clewell
Joseph G. "Brittle" Clewell, 87, of Lansford, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital in Allentown. He was the husband of Dina G. (Totani) Clewell, to whom he was married for 63 years this past July 30.
Born in Jim Thorpe, he was a son of the late Elmer and Anna (Butchko) Clewell.
He was a graduate of the former East Mauch Chunk High School in 1948.
He worked for the PBE Railroad and then Bethlehem Steel, where he had retired.
Joseph served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the USS Raby.
He was a 67-year life member of the Jim Thorpe American Legion and Son of the American Legion Revolution, where he served as a past president for the Schuylkill Chapter, and was a current member of the Valley Forge Chapter. He was a life member of the Albrightsville VFW and social member of the Lansford American Legion.
Joseph was a member of the former St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Lansford and current member of St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley in Summit Hill.
He was a life member of the Hillside Hunters Club, serving as a past secretary and treasurer for 30 years. Joseph was instrumental in the forming of the Lehigh River Gorge-State Park Association. Joseph was a two time inductee in the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed baseball, NASCAR, gardening, making wine and was an avid fisherman and hunter having been the recipient of the Triple Crown three times.
Surviving, along with his beloved wife, are six children, Anna Rose, and husband James Perinotti, of Whitehall, Joseph Jr., and wife Debra, of Gilbert, Donna Workman of East Stroudsburg, Louise, and husband LeRoy Sorensen, of New Tripoli, Robert of Lansford and Dina and husband Mark Tout, of Nesquehoning; nine grandchildren, six great-
grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Clewell.
Service: Funeral service on Monday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. from the Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley, Summit Hill. Interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Jim Thorpe. Calling hours are Sunday from 4-7 p.m. and Monday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.
