Robert E. Ames, 69, of Coaldale, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, in his home, surrounded by family and dear friends.
He was a lifelong educator, retiring after 35 years as an elementary school teacher.
Born on Jan. 5, 1949, in Coal-dale, he was a son of the late Vernon O. and Nancy J. (Carr) Ames.
He was a 1966 graduate of Panther Valley High School, a 1968 graduate of Keystone Junior College, a 1970 graduate of Elizabethtown College, with a bachelor of science degree in education, and a 1975 graduate of Kutztown University, with a master's degree in education.
Robert was a member of St. Joseph's of the Panther Valley Catholic Church, Summit Hill. He was a choir director and organist for 52 years, first at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, Coaldale, and since 1980 at St. Joseph's of Panther Valley, Summit Hill.
He was honored by Pope John Paul II in July of 2002 for his service to St. Joseph's and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Summit Hill.
Ames was currently serving on the PA Board of Nursing. He also served as Commissioner for Standard Practice of the Commonwealth of PA for the Department of Education.
He was active in politics, serving as a member of the Republican Committee for PA for over 30 years. He worked for Sen. James Rhoades for 28 years; was the campaign treasurer for state Sen. David G. Argall; served as chairman for the NE Caucus for 24 years; and was a former chairman of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee, having served as its executive director in 2018.
Ames served on the Board of Trustees of the Coaldale Hospital for 30 years, and was its chairman from 2003-2006. In Coaldale, he served on borough council and was a past chairman of the Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Sewer Authority.
He belonged to the former Lansford Elks, now the Tamaqua Elks, Coaldale Lions Club and the Panther Valley Irish-American Association, and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1987, Ames was honored by the Panther Valley Irish American Association when he received its annual Shamrock Award.
He also served as chairman of the Coaldale 175th Anniversary Committee.
Surviving are his lifelong family friend, Richard Murphy, his wife, Anne, and their children, Kaylee, Ryan and Olivia; a cousin, Joseph Kane, his wife Peggy, and their family, of Havertown; and seven godchildren, Meredith D. Kester, Allison Ponting-Hosak, Joseph Kane, Kaylee Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Olivia Murphy and Jamie Schock-Faust.
Service: Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley Catholic Church, Summit Hill. Interment, St. Joseph's Cemetery, White St., Summit Hill.
