Bertha Tedrow Obituary

Bertha Marie (Patchen) Tedrow

Bertha Marie (Patchen) Tedrow was born August 19, 1921, and passed away peacefully on February 27, 2021, at her home, The Lakes of Monclova, at age 99.

Marie was the daughter of Purley and Nellie Patchen and spent her childhood living in East Toledo. She had five siblings—Ruth, Ken, Ralph, LaVern and Vernon, all of whom have preceded her in death. Marie's primary career was working as a bookkeeper in their family business, Patchen Electric Company, which was started by her father. She remained actively involved through her early 80s. The 109-year-old business is known today as 'Dad' Patchen Electric.

She married Spurgeon R. Tedrow in 1940 and their adventures in life began. They raised three children in their South Toledo home - Marie (Art) Roche, the late Judy (Robert) Hoffman and Spurgeon (Jan) Tedrow, Jr.

Marie and Spurgeon were both gifted musically and used their talents throughout their lives. In 1947, Marie, Spurgeon, and her brother, Vernon, performed live as a trio on the radio station WTRT-FM, Toledo's first FM station, which was affiliated with WTOD. The trio sang at the station on a weekly show for three years. Marie and Spurgeon also performed with the Toledo Choral Society, then on their own at local hospitals and nursing homes.

Marie and Spurgeon loved to travel. Many family vacations included journeys to all 50 states and Canada. The couple especially enjoyed visiting National Parks and spending time with family and friends in southern California.

Family time was special to Marie, along with her involvement in bowling leagues at Southwyck Lanes beginning in the late 1970s. She continued bowling until she was 92 years of age.

After her husband died in 1997, she moved to Monclova Township. Then in 2015, she moved to The Lakes of Monclova. Marie was a lifelong member of the Toledo Church of God, where she and her husband were very actively involved.

In addition to her children, Marie has eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The family of Marie Tedrow extend their sincere thanks to the staff at The Lakes of Monclova for the many years of care provided to her.

We have special memories of our visits with Marie. She always managed to see the bright side of any situation and the memory of her quick wit still brings a smile. Our times together were always too short but we are thankful for the great memories made. She was a special mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to so many. She will be missed by all!
Our love and prayers for comforting memories of Marie for her family.
