Darrell Keith Clay

1928 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Darrell Keith Clay

Surrounded by his loving family, Darrell Keith Clay, 90, of Perrysburg, passed away on July 6, 2018, following a brief stay at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Darrell was born on March 16, 1928 in Swanton, OH to parents Darrell and Grace (Halderman) Clay.

Darrell attended Bowling Green State University after graduating from Swanton High School but left to serve as a sergeant in the US Army for three years during the Korean War. He met his wife, Helen, while stationed at Fort Dix and returned with her to finish his degree. He also played football for the Falcons and was captain of the team his senior year.

Darrell began his 45-year career in education as a teacher at Woodward High School. After four years, he became the head basketball coach of the Polar Bears, which was one of the best experiences of his life. He furthered his education by completing two graduate degrees from the University of Toledo. He continued his career as Assistant Principal at Bowsher High School, worked at the Board of Education hiring new teachers, spent 12 years as the principal of Start High School, and retired as a curriculum director at the Toledo Board of Education.

Darrell enjoyed many hobbies such as skiing, golfing, tennis, and traveling to the Old West. He loved to laugh, have fun, tell stories, wear cowboy boots, dance and was a faithful fan of all of the Detroit teams.

His sense of humor and kind heart brightened the loves of those left to cherish his memory: Helen, his wife of 67 years; his daughters, Debra of Reno, and Dr. Susan Clay-Hufford of Toledo; grandchildren, Coley, Casey, Kyle and Kelsey of Nevada, and grandchildren Tiffany (North Carolina), Tara (Georgia), Tanya (Colorado), and Troy (Ohio). Darrell will also be fondly remembered by his 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Doris Jean; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the home-health aides for their interactive caregiving.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front Street, Perrysburg, where the family will begin greeting guests at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to the Wild Animal Sanctuary of Colorado (http://www.wildanimalsanctuary.org) where one of Darrell's granddaughters volunteers. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Online condolences to the family may be made at
