John Hanna Obituary
John Hanna

John Hanna lived a life in service to others and died at the age of 95 on December 28, 2018, in Defiance OH.

Born in Brainerd, Minnesota, on January 1, 1923, to William and Emma Hanna, John graduated from Brainerd High School eventually earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Like most men of the greatest generation his education was interrupted by World War ll. John joined the Navy and became an aviator and officer before he was 21. He continued serving through the Naval Reserve.

Following graduation he moved to Toledo and worked in various management capacities with the Toledo Edison Company until he retired after 35 years. He left Toledo in 1979 moving to Defiance OH to oversee electrical production for northwest OH. John married Joyce McDonough in 1951. They raised their children, Patrick (Rae Ann) Hanna, Michael Hanna, Robert (Karen) Hanna, Mary (Clint Jr.) White, William (Bridgett) Hanna and James (deceased). They delighted in visits with their 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Joyce died in early 2017. John's parents and brother, William Edward, also predeceased him.

John Hanna gave more than most. He was a consistent Red Cross blood donor for more than 60 years. He was a lifelong member of the Lions Club and the Defiance Elks. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member and a leader in both the Girl and Boy Scouts. John was recognized as the initial Volunteer of the Year by the Defiance Hospital Auxiliary for his 25 years of service installing emergency response telephone Lifeline systems throughout the area.

When he and Joyce wintered in Arizona they and their friends would venture out to fruit farms and deliver freshly picked food to food banks. In their spare time they assisted in building homes with Habitat for Humanity. Their's were lives devoted to others.

John and Joyce served as greeters at St. John the Evangelist Church, 510 Jackson Ave. in Defiance, OH, where funeral services will be held on February 2nd at 11am. A celebration of their lives will follow from noon to 5pm at the Defiance Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to any of the many groups in which John was involved would be greatly appreciated.
