Ryan Serber Obituary

Just before daybreak on Monday, January 9, 2006, Ryan Serber's battle with brain cancer ended. The disease took Ryan's life but not his laughter or his dignity. Ryan was born on March 6, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York, to Donna and Barry Serber and moved to Toledo in 2000. At the time of his passing, Ryan was surrounded by the love of his wife, Carrie (Barto) Serber; sister, Loren Traylor and his parents, Donna Powell and Barry and Carol Serber. Through his battle, Ryan taught those around him to love, live and laugh. But, most of all, to appreciate every day. Once diagnosed with this disease, Ryan turned his energies to supporting others and never missed an opportunity to help someone in need. He was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society. In addition, he served as Master of Ceremonies for the Toledo Hospital Charity Auction.
Ryan was best known as Main Anchor and host of Toledo's Most Wanted Program for WUPW Fox Toledo News. During his tenure at Fox, he received numerous accolades for his outstanding news casts. Ryan's news career started in Bristol, TN, where he received his first position after graduating with a BA in Communications from Loyola University in New Orleans, LA. His career took him to Wichita Falls and Austin, TX, before going to Orlando, FL, where he was able to act as a local correspondent for ABC and CNN on national stories. At the time of his death, Ryan worked for NBC Channel 24 as an Account Executive.
Ryan's passion included his wife and marathon running of which he completed four marathons including the Chicago Marathon in 2004 almost one year after receiving a stem cell transplant at Henry Ford Hospital. In addition to running, Ryan loved Michigan football, Kentucky basketball and the New York Yankees.
If the measure of a man is the impact he had on others and the friends that he made, then Ryan walked with giants.
In addition to his wife, parents and sister, Ryan is survived by his grandmother, Faye Serber; brother and sister-in-law, David and Lauren Kelly; brother-in-law, Kirk Traylor; his nephews, Cameron and Logan Traylor and nieces, Grace Kelly and Olivia Traylor. Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, Rhonda and Reid Ashinoff and Mickey and Adele Serber and cousins, Ellen Zomback, Alexandra and Zachary Ashinoff and Richard Serber.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 West Sylvania Avenue, with memorial services beginning at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ryan Serber Foundation. Online condolences may be sent to www.Ryan Serber.com

Carrie,

I know Ryan from Johnson City/Bristol TN. We became instant friends and had a lot of great times together. He was a very special person and though we didn't stay in touch as much as I wish we could have, I will always treasure the memories. I am so happy that he found true love and as he referred to you in an email to me "his angel" and now I'm trying to take comfort in knowing that he his now an angel for all of us! My thoughts and prayers are with you and his family and other friends!

Carrie,

I had the privilege to work with Ryan at NBC 24, and I can truly say that he was a great man. He always had a way to make you smile, even if he was not having a great day himself. I can remember many days that Ryan would always make a way to say something nice to me, and for that I will never forget is wonderful words and smile. My prayers are with you as you go through this time of sadness.

I had the wonderful opportunity to be Carrie's roomate for a couple of years after college and was really able to see and observe when Carrie and Ryan first started dating. From the get go they were always going on adventures, running, biking, etc... It was truly a joy to know Ryan and Carrie and to see first hand their very special and wonderful relationship blossom and grow. Carrie you have had tremendous strength during this time and know Greg and I will be praying for you and for you family.

Carrie, we are friends of your mother through Mary Kay. We only know Ryan through the stories Esther and Ted have told us. He was a remarkable young man and they loved him very much. My deepest sympathy for your loss, but what a great joy you must feel to have met and loved a man like Ryan. Our prayers are certainly with you during this time of sorrow and joy.

I didn't know this man, but I was just reading his obituary. What a wonderful blessing he must have been to those around him. If only we could all be so positive and helpful in times of need. God Bless your family and loved ones and may his spirit reunite with Jesus in heaven. Hang in there. Just know, that even a stranger was touched by this man.

I moved to Toledo 6 years ago and met Carrie (Ryan's wife). The girls went out one cold winter night, and we met a bunch of guys from FoxToledo news. Ryan and Carrie started dating. Soon there after, it was LOVE!

The two of them had something that many never have the opportunity to experience. In fact, some are jealous of the kind of love that Ryan and Carrie got to experience because it is called unconditional love. Over the past 6 years the two of them have become such close friends to me, they have become my "family" here in Toledo. I was honored to be a part of their wedding party recently in October where they were able to proclaim their love before all. It is Ryan and Carrie Serber that have taught me how far on a journey in life some courage and love can take you. They have taught me to greet each day with the strength of a SMILE and the grace

of wonderful attitude despite the circumstance! Ryan I thank you for meeting my dear friend Carrie. You have taught me so much in 6 short years and left me with so many wonderful memories. I am thankful for you and the times that we had. Your wife is in good hands. We will forever take care of her

with the same strength, attitude and of course, SMILE that you left of us with. With loving memories, Suzie (Stacee) Watson
