Thomas G. OVERLEY Obituary
OVERLEY Thomas G. Thomas G. Overley, 59, of Ottawa Hills, died peacefully at home Wednesday, March 14, 2012, surrounded by his family. A self-described "lawyer, luthier and lover of life", Tom battled cancer for the past 12 years. He was well respected in the community as a fine attorney and an outstanding musician. Beyond that, he was admired by all who knew him as a great father to his daughters, Maggie, Libby and Alli, and one of the best friends a person could ever have. Tom was born August 9, 1952, in Detroit to Paul Overley and Aileen Carey Overley. The family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan and later Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1977 and the University of Toledo College of Law in 1984. After working at the law firm of Wagoner and Steinberg for nearly 20 years, Tom began his own solo practice in 2004. He developed significant expertise in the field of manufactured home law, representing a number of parks in northwest Ohio. Many in Toledo knew Tom through his passion for music. An excellent guitarist, he loved to make people happy by playing and singing for them, in a neighbor's back yard or on stage. His last public performance was with The Kirbys in January. Tom also joined many of his attorney-musician friends in a benefit performance at Mickey Finn's last December. He was a founding member of the Plat Three Band and played often at the former Vineyard in Westgate and the Inverness Club over the past 10 years. Tom was past president of the Black Swamp Blues Society. He was an excellent woodworker and had the skill to build his own guitar. He was also a man of deep faith who attended Bible studies classes and helped others develop spiritually. Tom is survived by his daughters, Margaret Aileen Overley, Elizabeth Ellen Overley, and Allison Faye Overley; his brother, William Overley of Orlando, Florida; nieces, Olivia and Whitney Overley and many friends. The mother of his three daughters, Kellie Overley, also survives. His parents, predeceased him. There will be no funeral services. The family will host a Celebration of Life reception in honor of Tom on March 21, 2012, at Inverness Club from 4 to 7 p.m. The family requests that any memorial donations may be made to the Life Raft Group, a support group for those who (like Tom) suffer from Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors.
