Thomas Joseph Mitchell

9/19/1935 - 12/14/2020

Thomas J. Mitchell of Maumee, OH was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Thomas George Mitchell and Lenore Julia Burque spending his childhood and adolescent years on a farm in Centerville, Minnesota. After 85 wonderful and productive years with many accomplishments, Tom passed away peacefully with family by his side on December 14, 2020 in Houston, Texas.

He attended St. John's University and the University of Minnesota graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry. During his college years, he worked in laboratories in the food and cleaning compounds industry starting his career with Ecolab. Several of his children were born to him and Rosemarie Frances Wright in St. Paul Park. With a great career opportunity to move the family to Maumee, Ohio for the position of Technical Director later being named Director of Research and Development for Spartan Chemical Inc., this is where he would unceasingly offer his passion, dedication, and knowledge to a very respectable and growing company. Tom travelled to many countries offering his expertise of formulating cleaning compounds and made countless friends over the years by engaging in a professional and personal level. After 30 years retiring in 1997 from Spartan Chemical as a respected contributor of his talent, he then began the next phase of his life that took him on a wonderful journey of serving God, spending time with his family and friends, and further learning about himself and his purpose. He had an expansive mind that he utilized so well to benefit himself and others always yearning for knowledge. St. Patrick of Heatherdowns would become his second home with many wonderful opportunities to serve the Church that he embraced. He enjoyed daily Mass, attending talks of different topics, watching baseball and all other sports, reading, golfing, and engaging in conversation. Tom was also a well-respected baseball coach being a student of the game for over 45 years that taught so many players including his sons how to properly play the game. He loved sports and was a terrific athlete growing up. Most importantly, he loved his family and attended so many significant events that involved the Mitchell Family. His children were very blessed to call him their Dad learning so much from him. God gave us a beautiful masterpiece in the person of Tom Mitchell as he showed us all how to love through his generosity of time, talent, and treasure.

He is preceded in death by his parents and the mother of his children. Surviving are his 9 children, John (Anita), Linda, Lucille, Joe, Tom (Gail), Mike, Gerald, Leah, and Laura (Etai) Funk along with his siblings George, John, Theresa, and Gerald. He was the youngest of five. Papa Tom, often referred to as P.T., loved his 17 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren very much as he left a beautiful legacy of knowing and always supporting each of them. His legacy will further live on through many generous contributions to the local Catholic Schools, the Toledo Diocese, and to St. John's University.

The Mass for Tom Mitchell will be at 11:00 a.m. with Visitation at 10:00 a.m. in the church narthex celebrating at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns on May 7th. The Mass will be livestreamed from the St. Pats website. Interment will be private at Resurrection Cemetery.

I enjoyed working with Tom at the MultiFaith Council of NW Ohio Annual Banquet. Every year Tom would take care of the drinks. He worked diligently and quietly. You could always count on him to do what he said he would do. What an awesome legacy - 9 children! All of you had a truly wonderful man for a father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Thank you for sharing Tom with the world! He will be greatly missed. Take your rest Tom. You have completed your work. Praying for peace that passes understanding during the grieving season.

Tom will be missed. He was quietly and competently helpful for all of the MultiFaith Council of NW Ohio banquets and other food service events. He never made a fuss. He just got the job done and usually donated the beverages. What a kind and generous man and a life well lived!
