Victor Snieckus Obituary

Victor Algirdas Snieckus passed away Dec 18th holding the hands of his son, Darius, and daughter, Naomi, at her cottage in the Kawarthas. An internationally laureled professor of organic chemistry first at University of Waterloo and later Queen's University, where he held the prestigious Bader Chair, Victor was an inspirational force and one of the science's great educator-communicators, a man who always had time to discuss chemistry and all the better if convened with good food and wine on the table and napkins for sketching out new-born molecular structures. If you were in the "Snieckus Group" you were lucky to be challenged, educated, supported, hosted by Vic and his wife. He is predeceased by his wife Anne (nee Pinkham) and will be missed by his family: Rebecca McGuire-Snieckus, Matt Baram, Noah and Sunniva. Arrangements will be made to hold a celebration of his life in the spring. #vicsnieckus #alwaysacardinal

I know it was a long time ago now but I just saw this online. Naomi and Darius you know you have my condolences and I am sure that Victor is at peace with his lovely Anne alongside him. Sorry to have known he went but I have too many memories. I think your dad would say you need not write too much as that would be a waste of time. I heard that phrase of waste of time often and how success was 98 percent hardwork and 2percent talent. Intelligent he always has been and that is how I remember him as well your mum Anne. Cherish the memories and though I know Naomi I did write you back when this happened, I still remember your pops often. Peace to his spirit and my condolences still. Zahida Khanani

I took 2nd year organic chem from Dr Snieckus at waterloo back in the early 90s. He threw a big party for everyone after the exam, they played street hockey and drank beer.......he failed half the class LOL.
He was an inspiration for me going into medicinal chemistry, I solved chemistry problems for both a novel antibiotic and a heart failure medication based on what I learnt bout swapping electrons from vic.

Naomi and Darius - Phyllis and I were sorry to learn of Vic's passing. We lost touch with Vic when he moved away from Waterloo but we still have many wonderful memories of the evenings we shared together with he and Anne in the company of good friends, good food and excellent wine. Naomi and Darius, our thoughts are with you.

Victor was my research prof at the University of Waterloo n the mid 60’s. Those of us who worked for Victor were challenged everyday to think outside the box. Social times were enjoyed with him and his lovely wife Anne. I also had the distinct pleasure to tach his son Darius Chemistry at KCI in Kitchener. My condolences to Darius, his sister Naomi and the rest of the family.

Vic was the first university lecturer that I heard when enrolling at the University of Waterloo in 1971. He impressed me then and also when I was a student in his chemistry classes. He inspired me to become an organic chemist too. I will always treasure this memory of him.

It was such an honour to know Victor, Anne, Darius and Naomi. Victor’s sense of humour always was entertaining and he sure gave me some sound advice about how to succeed. He treated my family and I very well and we were lucky to know him and his family. Victor you made a difference in the lives of many. Now you have joined Anne. Peace to both your spirits. You live on in our memories.
