Harry Blackwell Jr. Obituary
Harry O. Blackwell, Jr., age 70 transitioned on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro NJ. Born in Trenton, N.J., he was a lifelong resident. Harry, better known as Chubby, was the son of Harry O. Blackwell, Jr. and Elizabeth Childs Blackwell. Chubby is a graduate of Trenton Central High School (1964) and the Water and Sewage Technical School (1966) and completed coursework at Mercer County Community College (1971-74) and Trenton State College (1976-77). Chubby retired from the City of Trenton in 2007 after 34 years of dedicated service. Chubby retired from the New Jersey National Guards in 1991 after 24 years of honorable service. He entered the Officer Candidate School in 1967 and rose to the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Race Relation Council and was a recruiter and counselor in its Governor’s Youth Program which afforded many inner-city and township children an opportunity to attend summer camp. Chubby was a community activist. He was a volunteer coach for his beloved Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd Church for 22 years. He served on several Boards of Directors, established numerous athletic programs, most notably the Trenton Golf Program. He served for many years as a Democratic Committeeman and chaired voter registration in 1979. He has been cited and honored on numerous occasions, most notably, The NAACP youth award (1977), Outstanding Young Men in America (1978), Community Cultural Club “Father of the Year´(1986). Predeceased by his parents, brothers Harold, Levi, and Rodney Blackwell; sister Louella Hayes; friend John Couch, he is survived by the “light of his life” his daughter, Rukiya A. Blackwell, Esquire; brother Karl (Ruby) Blackwell, sisters Josephine Blackwell, Beatrice Washington, Karen Rowe, Clara Boatwright, and Ellen Stacey (David) Lewis, Sister-in-law Nettie Blackwell; His cherished friends Archie Dent, Jeremiah Furman Witherspoon and Robert King; and a special bond of love and gratitude to Betty Blackwell, Grace Crossland, Terri Green, Linda Green and Jacob for their untiring care of Chubby during his lengthy illness. Funeral service will be 11am Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Shiloh Baptist Church 340 Rev. S. Howard Woodson Way Trenton, NJ. Calling hours will be 9am until time of service at the church. Interment Greenwood Cemetery Hamilton, NJ. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home.
