Evelyn Louise Hoffman, 79, of Rio Verde, Ariz., passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Evelyn was born May 4, 1939, at her Pegher grandparents' farmhouse in Wexford. Her parents were Regis B. Easley and Hilda (Pegher) Easley. She was the second of five daughters and graduated from North Allegheny High School in 1957. That same year, Evelyn married her husband, William Hoffman, and they had three children: Gary, Jill and Joan. Together, during their 60-year marriage, Ev and Bill lived in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Washington and Arizona. A lifelong student, Ev graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., with a bachelor's degree in English in 1976 and earned a master's degree in education from Seattle Pacific University in 1989. She taught high-school English in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Washington, retiring from Everett High School in 1998. In addition to her teaching career, she also loved cooking and hosting parties, traveling, singing in the church choir and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandsons. Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Jill; her parents; and her sister, Mary Pallas. She is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Gary (Mary Ann), of Arlington, Wash.; daughter, Joan, of Bellingham, Wash.; grandsons, Nicholas, of Reno, Nev., and Joseph, of Everett, Wash.; her sisters, Eileen Gross (Bob), Norma Wolff (Frank) and Sandra Jackson (Jim), all of western Pennsylvania; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends from throughout the US and beyond; and her beloved Maltese, Maggie Rose. Evelyn's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Rev. Dr. Cathy Northrup, Irene Mewett, Arlene McKinney, Eileen Gross, Kathy Riley, Michelle and Gary Holcomb, and the skilled and compassionate people at Hospice of the Valley for helping to care for Evie during her illness.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Verdes Community Church in Rio Verde, Ariz., to celebrate Evelyn's life.
