Peter C. Dozzi

1930 - 2017

Peter C. Dozzi, of Pittsburgh, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017. He was born April 7, 1930, son of Eugenio "Eugene" Dozzi and Vincenza "Jenny" (DiLucchio) Dozzi. Born and raised in the Lincoln/Lemington/Larimer section of East Liberty, Pete, the son of immigrant parents, after graduating from Penn Hills High School, was the first in his family to graduate from college, attending the University of Pittsburgh and earning a degree in civil engineering. When asked why he chose Pitt, his answer was "because that's where the streetcar went." After graduation, he landed a job at the Pennsylvania Railroad but within six months was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return, he went to work for Branna Construction, where his father also worked as a carpenter superintendent. Due to broken promises, he left Branna in 1957 to start his own firm, Jendoco Construction, which stands for the JENny DOzzi COmpany in honor of his mother, who passed when he was a young teenager. Starting from very humble beginnings in the basement of his father's house, Pete grew the company to be one of the premier general contracting firms in the Pittsburgh region. Some of the major projects completed are Winchester-Thurston, Trimont, Pitt's School of Law, Forbes Regional Hospital (Monroeville), Water Works, South Side Works/Cinema/Offices/Town Square, Lemont restaurant, Beaver County Courthouse, Brashear High School, Verizon (numerous locations), Temple Sinai, Tree of Life, Jewish Community Center, Beth Shalom, Rodef Shalom, Geneva College Reeves Field and Mall, St. Vincent College Sis and Herman Dupre Science Pavilion, Duquesne University Power Center, Carnegie Mellon University Scott Hall/Dougherty Hall/Warner Plaza, Calvary Episcopal Church restorations, Carnegie Museum Dinosaur Hall, Heinz History Center and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Pete was proud of his long-term relationships with repeat clients such as Haskell Furniture, Pennex Products and many of the organizations listed above. Another source of pride was the opportunity to work with the many craftsmen employed by the company for the past 60 years through today. These dedicated and skilled men and women were and are a critical part of Jendoco's success. Pete also built a number of successful real estate companies, developing industrial, office, retail and multi-tenant residential properties throughout Western Pennsylvania. He served on the board of the Master Builders Association (MBA) from 1966-98, as president from 1974-76 and as the Labor Committee chairman from 1968-74, then re-joining the committee in 1977. He was president of Churchill Valley Country Club from 1975-78, a member of Old Collier Golf Club, and a member of the former BSNI on Nelson Street. He also created a charitable foundation to fund educational opportunities for disadvantaged students from the Pittsburgh region. He was an active and outgoing man throughout his life, enjoying golf, skiing (through his 80s), fishing trips in Canada and extensive travel where he loved discovering the unique attributes of different countries and cultures. He was well known for his ability to tell stories and have a joke or clever quip for almost every situation, and he could entertain his friends and family for hours with funny and heartfelt antidotes. He enjoyed being around a table with those he loved, sharing each other's company along with a good glass of wine and celebrating life. He is survived by his wife, Terry (Manley) Dozzi; daughter, Petrina Lloyd (Bob); son, Domenic; grandchildren, Bill and Jim Lloyd, Daina Gigliotti, and Marta, Elsa and Paul Dozzi; his sister, Marguerite Iole; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Lloyd, and a brother, Gene Dozzi. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Georgiadis for his compassionate care.
