Joseph J. Butchko Obituary
Joseph John Butchko, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at home, in Monroeville. He was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Somerset County, Tire Hill (Krings), to George and Mary (Havrilak) Butchko. He was an active and devoted member with his wife, Dorothy, in the Monroeville Christian Church. Joe graduated from Conemaugh Township High School and worked mostly installing and repairing pumps in deep wells. After retiring, he took a part-time job with Giant Eagle as a grocery bagger/cart-handler until almost 90 years of age (he was quite popular as sort of a store mascot). Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, the former Dorothy Margetta, the following siblings, Anna (Michael) Chinchar, Mary (Raymond) Wilkerson, Michael (Anna Drager), George, Pauline (Buddy) Rogers, Paul (Victoria Biondo) and Stephen (Paula Horoschak), besides three infant siblings, Margaret, George and Elizabeth. His surviving siblings are Helen (William) Royer, John (Jean Haney), Eleanor (Anthony) Borzcik, Justine (Paul) Rusinko and Juliana (Richard) Mills. He served his country in the Korean War as a CPL in the 13th Army Ranger Co., 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. He and brothers, George and John were flown to Washington, D.C. on Sept. 29, 2012, on an Honor Flight with other war veterans from Columbus, Ohio, to visit the War Memorials. From their generation until the present time, 23 descendants of George and Mary Butchko have served in the military. Also, Joe was a marathon and ultra-marathon runner, competing in most of the elite races across the country and he, with brother, Paul, established and conducted the "Laurel Highland Ultra 70 MileTrail Run" from Ohiopyle to Seward, Pa., for 30 years and it continues still.
His cremated remains will be buried privately in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. Arrangements are being handled by JOBE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC.
