William R. Gallagher Obituary
William Regis "Bill" Gallagher, 93, of Monroeville, died peacefully surrounded by his family Monday, Dec. 24, 2018. He was preceded in death by Bunnie, his devoted wife of 60 years. He was the loving father of James, Susan (Rick) Seigh, both of Monroeville, and Donald (Donna), of Murrysville; and wonderful grandfather of Casey (Sean) Fox, Rick (Erin) Seigh, Megan (Dylin) Maust and Amy (Phil) Novak. "Big Papa" also leaves three great-grandchildren, Thomas William and Emma Jane Seigh and Abigail Lenore Fox; as well as sisters, Mariagnes Clifford and Nancy Tavis, both of Boston, Mass. Bill was born in Pittsburgh on July 7, 1925, to the late Regis and Helen (King) Gallagher. Upon graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1943, Bill enlisted in the Navy and became a radio operator. He was stationed aboard a submarine chaser which patrolled the Florida Straits for mines and enemy submarines. Bill rose in rank to signalman second class before leaving the Navy in 1946 to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where in 1950 he graduated as a geological engineer. Bill worked for Columbia Gas in Pittsburgh for 30 years before retiring in 1981. Bill and Bunnie enjoyed some exciting trips together, visiting Ireland many times to explore the Gallagher heritage, sailing a schooner in Maine, and several trips that had them setting sail for a week around the Chesapeake Bay. Some of Bill's hobbies included sailing his own Pintail class sailboat, watercolor painting, gardening, and he had an immense love of golf. He will be sadly missed by his family but celebrated for the wonderful full life with which he was blessed. Our family would like to extend a very special thank you for the compassion and love of Jim Gallagher, whose attentiveness and devotion to Dad these past seven years was exceptional and deeply appreciated. We'd also like to thank Tara and Lisa from Bridges Hospice for the tender, loving care they provided for our dad. Their services were invaluable.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at JOBE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL), corner of Beatty Road and 48 North, Monroeville (412-856-4747). A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at St. Bernadette Parish. Interment will follow at Good Shepherd Cemetery.
