William L. Colbert Obituary
William Louis Colbert, 90, of Dawson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Monday, July 9, 2018, in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. He was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Liberty, Fayette County, a son of the late William M. and Eva (Wilson) Colbert. In his younger years, he attended the Vanderbilt United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. Bill worked as a car inspector for the P&LE Railroad until his retirement. He was extremely knowledgeable of the world around him and mastered every task he would undertake. Bill received his pilot license in his early years, building his own plane and flying his wife and children over Fayette County. He was an avid historian, collecting local history and artifacts of the Tri-Town area during the region of the Coal & Coke Era. His collections also included many railroad artifacts as well. Recently, Bill and his wife, Betty, donated the entire collection to the Tri-Town Area Historical Society. Bill was an avid birdwatcher, as he and his wife would be seen daily in the driveway of their home feeding all types of birds, which they knew every variety. He was known by every engineer on the B&O Railroad, as "Railroad Bill" and as the trains past by his home, they would blast a whistle and wave! Bill was also a member of the James Cochran Free and Accepted Masons No. 614 of Dawson. He is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Bill is survived by his wife, Betty J. (Culler) Colbert, who would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary, July 23, 2018; his daughters, Patty Lint and husband, Eugene, and Dara Hoke and husband, Kenny; his daughter-in-law, Wannona Colbert; his grandchildren, Melissa Loughman and husband, Rick, and William Colbert and wife, Colby; his great-grandchildren, Emily, Elliot and Eli Loughman, Chasity, Callie Morgan and Olivia and Addy Colbert; his brothers, Robert Colbert and Joseph Colbert and wife, Phyllis; his sister, Ethel Shaffer and husband, Dick; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William M. Colbert (2011); his sister, Betty Overly, and brother-in-law, Frank Overly; and his sister-in-law, Laverne Colbert.
