Matthew Robert "Matt" Gibbons, 32, of Washington Township, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017, in Washington Township. Born April 16, 1985, in New Kensington, he was a son of Robert R. Gibbons and Sandra J. (Huth) Ridenour. Matt was a 2004 graduate of Kiski Area High School and was currently attending Triangle Tech. He was employed for several years by Alcoa as a smelting tech. He was very active with the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department where he was serving as 1st Lieutenant and was a former member of Apollo Hose Company No. 2 Fire Department. Matt enjoyed riding quads, his side by side, shooting guns with his cousins and was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan. He cherished the time he spent with his children. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Louise (Ament) Gibbons, and his maternal grandfather, Daniel Huth. Survivors include his father, Robert "Rob" (Chris) Gibbons, of Apollo; mother, Sandra (Ken) Ridenour, of Washington Township; children, Alexis and Jaxon Gibbons, of Lower Burrell; sister, Nicole Palmiscno, of Lower Burrell; maternal grandmother, Betty Huth, of Ford City; stepbrother, David (Kris) Ridenour, of Washington Township; stepsister, Heather (Josh) Rings, of Ford City; girlfriend, Lauren Grabstanowicz, of Washington Township; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY INC., 100 Owens View Ave., Apollo. The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department will conduct a firemen's service at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Philip Ramstad officiating. Private burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo.

Today would have been Matt´s 37th birthday. We miss him, we love him, and we would give anything to see him blow out his birthday candles. We´re still struggling with his absence.

I just thought the world of Matt. He worked for us for a while several years ago and he made it a joy to come in every morning. Such a bright smile, always a positive and kind word to say. He was amazing at his job with us, as he was at everything he did. I, as many people, am so saddened by this tragedy. He will be horribly missed by so many people. I don't think he even realized how many people he had touched in his life, but that was just who he was. Our prayers will be with Matt and all of his family and friends for always.

It's a time of broken hearts and broken spirits. We have lost our most precious possession: a loved one, a family member, a father of two beautiful children who are still wondering what has happened to their Dad, and a loving companion of a beautiful person. We also died with Matt but we are not yet going to Heaven. We will very slowly come back to life to mourn and grieve, over time. Matt has earned a special place in Gods squad of public servants. Our lives have changed forever, we'll always feel the pain. But, our memories and our love for Matt will never, never wane.
