James D. Capizzi Obituary
James D. Capizzi, 84, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of New Kensington, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at home. He was born Feb. 10, 1934, in New Kensington. A 1951 Ken-Hi graduate, he received a Bachelor's Degree in 1954 from Clarion State College. In 1956, he taught fifth grade at Lake View Elementary in Conneaut, Ohio before teaching at Victoria Avenue Elementary in Arnold. He served as a Specialist 4 in the Army from 1957-1959 in Germany where he was awarded a Certificate of Achievement as a finance clerk of the 2nd Armored Rifle Battalion, 41st Infantry, 4th Armored Division for his distinguished service for transitioning and implementation phases of pay records. He earned his Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also taught evening classes, as well as at Penn State University in New Kensington from 1959-1969 and PhD. program in 1969-1970. He became a Curriculum Coordinator for the New Ken-Arnold School District in 1963 and Assistant Principal from 1963-1968 before becoming Director of Elementary Education in 1968 of NKASD. He was acting Superintendent from 1986-1988, at which time he retired from NKASD while on sabbatical to care for his beloved parents in Florida. He loved watching and playing golf, fishing, boating, painting, playing piano, gardening, flying airplanes and traveling, his most memorable trip to Istanbul, Turkey in May 2018, but he mostly loved spending time with his family. He was so proud of and adored his relationship with his granddaughter, Ashley. Jim was a 50-plus year Master Mason of the Tyrian Lodge 644 in New Kensington. He was a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret 32 degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in the Valley of Pittsburgh. In addition, he was a Noble of the Syria Shrine in Cheswick. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Rita; his son, Mark Capizzi, of New Kensington; daughters, Sheri (David) Gordon, of Upper Burrell, and Cathi (Tom) Olinger, of Zelienople; granddaughter, Ashley (Dylan) Olinger, of Pittsburgh; stepson, Scott (Sebnem) Studner, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; mother of his children, Donna Capizzi, of New Kensington; niece, Elizabeth (Chip) Capizzi, of Corvallis, Ore.; nephew, Jeffrey (Susan) Capizzi, of Portland, Ore. and their children, Marina and Darius; stepsons, Gerald (Wendy) Plumbo, of Florida, and George Plumbo, of Maryland; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Eunice (Keough) Capizzi; brothers and sister-in-law, Joseph (Jane) Capizzi and David Capizzi; as well as his previous wife, Jo Ann (Delancey) Capizzi.
Friends and family are welcome to a celebration of Jim's life to be held at 11 a.m. Sat, Jan 19, 2019, at Arnold United Methodist Church, 1801 Leishman Ave., New Kensington, PA 15068, with Pastor Sharon Waltenbaugh officiating, along with a Masonic ceremony. A private burial will be held at Ohl Cemetery, Ohl, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Arnold United Methodist Church, 1801 Leishman Ave., New Kensington, PA 15068, or the Tyrian Lodge No. 644, 118 Allan St., Lower Burrell, PA 15068.
