LARRY ANDERSON Obituary

Larry Wayne Anderson 1940 - 2018 Nationally renowned Tacoma sculptor and painter Larry Anderson, 78, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018, at his home in Bonney Lake after a long illness. Born in Tacoma on September 30, 1940, he was the only child of Orville Franklin Anderson and Gladys Pearl (Russell) Anderson. He attended McKinley Elementary, Gault Junior High, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958. A pole vaulter in high school, he went to Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon on an athletic scholarship. After two years at Lewis and Clark, he transferred to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, receiving a bachelor's degree in education in 1962. He pursued graduate study in art at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, Austria in 1965, and at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1966. He completed a Master of Fine Arts in painting at the Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1968. He was an art teacher in Tacoma at Foss High School before launching his career as a sculptor. His first major work was "The Leaf" (1975). This was followed by "Trilogy" (1978). Both sculptures were commissioned by the City of Tacoma and are situated in Wright Park. Many other public sculptures are located in Tacoma. They include "Clearing the Way" in Fireman's Park, "New Beginnings" in front of Union Station, and "Coming Home" at South 56th and South Tacoma Way, all in 1984, Tacoma's centennial year. Others in Tacoma include "The Second Touch" a fountain figure at MultiCare Medical Center (1981), "A Fish Story" in front of Slovonian Hall in Old Town (2002), and "We Honor a Hero" on North I Street at Lowell Elementary (2003). Major works in the US include "Springfield's Lincoln", an ensemble of statues of Abe and Mary Lincoln and two of their boys in Springfield, Illinois (2004); "Continuum", with seven distinct life-size sculptures of people and animals, at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in West Lafayette, Indiana (2000); and "Directions" at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (1995). Larry's many bronze sculptures, over 70 in all, comprise a huge legacy of full-size figures and portrait busts. His paintings and drawings are also voluminous and include both realistic and abstract expressionist works. Larry is survived by his high-school sweetheart and beloved wife of 56 years Sharilyn Lea (Hoard) Anderson, daughters Kristen Murphy (Sean) of Tacoma and Marti Jane Anderson (Arden Miller) of Auckland, New Zealand, son Caplan Anderson (Mary McEwen) of Juneau, Alaska, and three grandchildren, Aldwyn James Anderson Miller, Ramona Jane Anderson, and Daphne Read McEwen. The family traveled extensively, and lived abroad in both Austria and France. Their French exchange student, Ludovic Arnould, with his wife EmmanuŠle and children Camille and Manon, also became members of the family. Larry leaves not only an inspiring legacy of fine art. He was a humanist, a romantic, and an excellent friend. He was full of integrity, optimism, good humor, humility, elegance, joy and faith a true lover of life. A memorial service and reception will be held at Kilworth Memorial Chapel on the University of Puget Sound campus at 1:00 pm on Sunday, October 21. Burial will be at Tacoma Cemetery.

I only briefly knew Larry and his wife and one young child when they'd only built their Bonney Lake home. We'd drove past it as it was being built and would often marvel at it's castle like structure being sided in what I recall where actually roof tiles. Economical and mold resistant in this often wet and mossy part of the world we shared. At the time, Larry had broken his arm somehow and needed help maintaining his yard. Over a few months while he healed and planned his now installed and admired daily Bonney Lake 410 welcome statue, I did yard work, weed eated, and would break old clay into workable "snakes" as he called them that he'd used in his small model work when planning the actual statues he would later build in bronze. I was honored to have seen the early model for the Bonney Lake Boy chasing birds state, and thought it was touching and masterful despite not knowing it's future significance and enrichment it now adds to all who live or pass through each day. Thank you for the opportunity to have known you. My deepest condolences, and fondest memories. Tim Hilll

After knowing Larry since high school, going with Larry and Sharilyn on their first date, discovering Larry and I were almost neighbors, and being a close friend (even at some distance most of the years since we launched our lives), I echo the tributes I've seen here and those shared by friends who went to the Memorial in Tacoma.

I still cannot believe I will not see Larry again, and my last memory is sitting on their upside down dinghy by the shore of Bonney Lake watching the Solar Eclipse in 2017. What a blessed time when Larry still entertained us with his witticisms, kept with us to marvel at the wonders of Nature and the Universe, however he perceived them. He always was "there" with love and humility.

Thank you to all for remembering a tender, extraordinary man who was a trail blazer and yet a champion of everyone he knew. A rare soul who will continue to impact us and the larger world many years to come.

Our Dad and Mom's friendship with the Andersons was very important to them. They were proud of Larry's art. They took visitors around Tacoma on Larry Anderson tours, showing them his statues and telling the story behind each. They took my sister, Marianne to visit him at Bonney Lake and see his studio. His kindness, gentleness and deep humanity showed in his work, as in the way he treated others. The whole family is in our thoughts, prayers, and memories.

Sharilyn, so sorry for your loss. We learned of Larry's passing too late to attend the service, but I'm sure it was lovely and friend-filled. He has left behind such a wonderful legacy. Love to you,

Mr. Anderson was my art Teacher at Hunt Jr. High, besides teaching the finer parts of art, I will always remember him for telling us all about "steak tartar" from his visit to France. Gaye Ramey-Young

Larry's sculptures in Wright Park have always captivated me. I've worked for Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma for 33 years and never find a day when I don't stop and appreciate the fun, carefree feelings given by the Trilogy piece. His work throughout Tacoma will forever please the passersby and a mind's eye process that puts you right there in the moment. My condolences to his family and all those that take a minute of their busy days to stop and look at memories in bronze.

Dear Sharilyn,
When Andrea was Caplan's preschool teacher at First United Methodist Church she will never forget her visit to your beautiful home full of such energy for life and love. She enjoyed seeing Larry's work shop where Kaplan liked to make clay creations right along side his dad. We were so delighted to become friends with the dynamic and loving duo. Larry was an inspiration to John in starting sculpting after his retirement from school administration. We remember when John created his first public sculpture, Larry drove out to spend the day helping him balance the
sculpture. He was very generous with his time. Also we remember fondly visiting some of your dear friends in the Chevreuse valley in France in 1985. We found out how your friendship was a treasure to them. We first met Francois the former mayor who showed us the Chateau Milton. He introduced us to George who showed us some sculptures Larry had left behind and even made reservations for us at his favorite hotel in Paris! They were delighted to meet anyone who knew you and thought we must be special, too. Andree Pourre invited us for a lovely lunch on their patio and Sophie took us on a wonderful tour of Paris. We weren't at all surprised to find how beloved you both were. We think everyone who has the gift of your friendship must feel that way. Going to Larry's sculpture dedications and listening to him talk about his beautiful creations will always be a part of us. We are very grateful to have had such a talented, compassionate, gentle, and generous friend in our lives.
Love, John and Andy

Larry and Sharilyn were the very first parents I conferenced with at Grant Elementary when I had Caplan (Cappy) in my Kindergarten class. They were the very first conference EVER in my career. I remember Larry as a very kind and caring man! Thanks for the amazing pieces you left around our great city Larry. You will forever be remembered!

Larry and Sharilyn have been treasured friends for a lifetime of shared triumphs and trials, joys and sorrows. Many years ago Larry sketched my then 12 year old daughter at a play in the Meadow in Gig Harbor. It is close to my heart, and, in the event of fire, it would be the prized possession I would reach for as I fled from the flames. We will meet again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, dear friend. Rest well, knowing that your life was lived to the fullest.

I remember when Marti was in in my preschool at First United Methodist Church. Larry was hesitant about moving to France to study and I said, "Go follow your dream!" What a dream it turned out to be! My sincere condolences to the family...
