DANIEL BARKLEY Obituary

Daniel Mark Barkley Dan died too soon of lung cancer at age 71 on July 1, 2017. Paraphrased from Adoration for My Grandpa by Carson Morin: "My grandpa was extremely amusing, extraordinarily generous and exceptionally caring. He was a teacher, counselor and administrator for Tacoma Public Schools beginning in 1968. He took delight in many jobs. Highlights included leadership from 1977 to 1979 at the American International School in Lagos, Nigeria, Africa, and from 1979 to 1981 as Coordinator of Special Education. He retired from Tacoma Public Schools in the year 2000 as Associate Superintendent. He was not done yet. From 2001 to 2012 he worked for the Washington State Superintendent in Olympia, always enjoying and supporting teachers and good teaching because he has always had a passion for helping students learn and grow. One of his best family memories was comprised of his 70th birthday party when his grandchildren prepared a wonderful dinner with a spectacular French theme. Other thrills include safaris with friends in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Kenya, and a hot air balloon ride in Tanzania over the wildebeest migration. Other exciting trips he enjoyed were to Peru, Tahiti, China and India with his wife of 49 years." Dan is survived by his brother Ken, wife Jill, son Bret Barkley (Vicky), daughter Alyssa Morin (Jesse), 6 grandchildren, Austin, Carson, Ben, Jack, Sara, and Hollie, and many loving relatives, including cute nieces and nephews. Thanks to the staff at "Graduate Tacoma," a celebration of life will be held on July 14th from 6 to 9pm at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. His many friends and colleagues who will truly miss Dan are invited to attend. A final journal can be found at www.caringbridge.org/DanBarkley. Welcomed contributions may be made to the Dan Barkley Future Teachers Scholarship Fund c/o The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1995, Tacoma, WA 98401-1995.

It´s only now that I learned of the loss of Dan. I so remember his warm smile, genuine hand shake and giving soul. He was so bright, kind and generous in all he did for teachers, children and the district. He will long be remembered as the best of the best.

He was my mentor and he always said how he wanted to see me grow up and become my own person. It kills me every day knowing that he never will get to see it happen. He would want me to remember the jun times a had with him and the advice that he gave me I will always remember my favorite grandparent and my mentor.

Dang. I hadn't spoken with Dan in years, but twice yesterday I thought of him. Anthony Bourdain did a "Parts Unknown" program on Lagos (I highly recommend), and the winner on Jeopardy was a person from Lacey who as a State Department brat had been in Nigeria. If he was school age, the odds are high he went to AIS. I was looking Dan up to tell him about the above. Wow. So sad.

I had no idea he had passed. I have only wonderful memories of all my interactions with Dan and Jill, beginning maybe in Athens in 1975, but for sure in Nairobi in 1977 and Lagos thereafter. He was as classy a guy as I ever dealt with. Warm, wise, great sense of humor and a wonderful sense of the sublime. Being he and Jill's house guest was a genuine treat, every time.

We saw each other every few years related to AIS Lagos or other educational stuff, and spending time with him always brightened my day. His generosity of spirit was particularly special. I was working on establishing a scholarship in the name of a mutual friend and called Dan since I was aware he knew how the Lagos Foundation handled things. He gave good advice and in the end offered, "If you can't find any other way that works out for taxes and all, I'm sure we could run it through the Lagos Foundation."

That's just how he was.

His family and the Tacoma community have lost a truly special man.

Time passes, fond memories linger. Dan left a wonderful legacy to all the staff at the Tacoma School District. I feel very fortunate to have been one of those staff members to have worked with Dan.

Dan will be missed. He made a lasting contribution wherever he went. Our family will always be grateful to him for our experiences in Lagos at AISL. In addition, his wise counsel, support, and insight made the opening of the Tacoma School of the Arts possible. Dan's positivity made changing education look easy. We are forever grateful to him. He is gone far too soon. Sunny, Steve, Daniel and Ian Cairns

RIP Mr. Barkley. I only knew you two years at McIlvaigh but you were a big influence in my life. You and Karen Noren opened up a new world of inquiry to me for which I am eternally grateful. Many thanks and it was a pleasure to know you. My prayers are with your family.
