I have just learned of the sad passing of one of the great researchers and champions in my field of Materials Engineering. He was a shining example of dedication to research and the mentoring of others, including me.
It was most encouraging, on my first meeting with this great name in the field of Metal Fatigue, to find him both warm and unassuming and open to discussion with a novice like myself.
I have fond memories of spending time exploring Budapest with Art in the late 80's (and discussing technical papers!). I will be eternally grateful that he agreed to be one of my referees when , in 1993, I successfully applied for a Chair at Portsmouth University.
He is greatly missed.

Of Arthur J. McEvily
12/20/1924 - 11/17/2019

Saying goodbye to a Legend
Where do I begin?
It's hard to find the first day
And the last day I saw you
Is even more vague, far too long ago.

You were highly educated and brilliant.
You were a pillar of knowledge,
And your stature was unquestionably
Steadfast and true - one of a kind.
There will never be another like you.
