David Ashmore Obituary

Published by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory- Lahm Chapel on May 1, 2021.

David Jefferson Ashmore May 3, 1953 - May 1, 2021 David J. Ashmore was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 3, 1953 to James Elwin Ashmore and Lottie Holt Ashmore. He was the oldest of four children - brothers Robert and Edward, and sister Jane. David spent the first five years of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, then moved to Indianapolis. When David was thirteen years old, his family spent a year in Munich, Germany. The year in Germany profoundly impacted David, and he learned to speak German fluently during his year abroad. As a child, David was an avid student, always curious, especially about living things. His love of nature was an extension of his interest in the spiritual, an interest he held his entire life. David always looked for the best in people. Even as a child, David possessed a deep capacity for connecting with people, a talent that would serve him throughout his life. Dave graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis and attended college at Indiana University to earn a Master's Degree in Toxicology. David spent his career in science, developing new technologies for Tambrands in Massachusetts, then Roche Diagnostics in Indianapolis. David's faith in God was incredibly strong, especially after his near death experience in a car accident at the age of twenty-three. He had an unshakeable faith in his Creator, and a huge heart for serving others. At the same time, he had a passion for science and used his knowledge and training to improve the lives of others. For David, science and religion could co-exist peacefully, and he said that he never felt like he needed to "check his mind at the door" to follow his belief in Christ. David loved being a father and grandfather, and he invested an incredible amount of time and love into his family. He enjoyed taking walks in the woods, camping, fishing, and playing the guitar. His favorite place to see the world was from the seat of his bicycle, and he took long bike rides whenever he got the chance. His love of bicycling started when he was a young boy and only grew stronger through his retirement years. He loved taking bike rides with his beloved wife, Nancy, and felt happiest when he had the wind at his back along the Cardinal Greenway trail. David flourished in retirement years after Roche, where he found a heart for ministering to others through Christ. He began his second career as a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church. He was the pastor at the Ingalls campus and the associate pastor at the main campus in Pendleton. He shared every gift that God gave him for the benefit of other people and impacted countless lives. He has been a Bible study and Worship leader - a Stephen's Ministry leader, Emmaus Walk sponsor, involved in the prison ministries of Kairos and Torch, and nursing home ministry. He loved singing his praises to God. He and Nancy shared common interests and hobbies, playing music, cooking and processing food, and their pets. Every hobby was approached in a scientific manner and as he said "You can take the scientist out of the lab, but not the lab out of the scientist". Their twelve years of marriage were the happiest of his life, he said, and that they are God's gift to each other. His Holy Spirit shone brighter and brighter this last year as he fought cancer. Dave is now living in paradise and continuing his praises to God. He will be reunited with Nancy in the future to continue their love forever. Dave can be reached by contacting and following Jesus Christ. David leaves behind wife Nancy Ashmore, daughter Elizabeth Garcia (Martin), daughter Erika Finn (Evan), three step-children: Joe Hartley (Esther), Julie Stutler (Dillon), and Sarah Hartley, six beloved grandchildren, his brother Rob (Jackie), sister Jane, three nieces and nephews, and countless friends and loved ones. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, his brother Edward, his nephew Steven, and two grandchildren, Vivian and Annemarie. To honor David's memory, please take a moment to spend time in nature and appreciate the beauty of God's creation. Dave was a crucial part of our wedding planning and officiated it for us 7 years ago. He didn't know it then, but he had a residual impact on our marriage. To this day, we remember him as a light who guided us and helped us to understand that spirituality and having a higher power does not have a "one-size fits all" approach. He showed us how he lived as a kind person, making beer and honey and riding his bike in town & in turn-loving God. He lived each day exuding this without ever having to open his mouth. We will always remember and have a huge place in our hearts for Dave. Our thoughts go out to his wife who he talked about often and loved very much.

Dave came into my life 20 years ago and left a permanent memory. His first impression was less than overwhelming. The long pony tail and less than casual appearance belied the wonderful image this man's soul possessed. Dave attended the Circle of Faith Sunday School class for a brief time and awed the class with his ability to recite Bible passages chapter and verse. He had a phenomenal mind and a kind spirit. It did not take Dave long to endear himself to our class and others in our congregation who came to know him. Dave approached Becki Kahl and my self with the idea of starting a Stephen's Ministry within our church. We followed upon on his suggestion and attended Stephen Leader training and offered classes for yhose interested in becoming Stephen Ministers. Both Dave and Nancy became Stephen's Ministers and were perfect fits for becoming caregivers. Both had serving hearts. Dave became a Stepen's Leader soon after and was a huge help with the administration of the program. Dave and Nancy led a frugal live style which was a wonderful example of how simple living can be an inspiration to others. At one time on their "Bucket List" they wanted to construct a yurt in Northern Michigan and live off the land in the wild north land. They are the people who taught me the meaning of yurt. Dave will be missed and Nancy has my deepest sympathy as we grieve his passing.

Was so sorry to see this announcement. Nancy, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Dave was an amazing person and co worker. He radiated joy in every single converstation I ever had with him. Smart, funny, talented, passionate... are just a few words that I would use to describe him. RIP Dave. The world is a better place because of your time here.

My sympathies to Dave's family on his too-soon transition to the other side - at Roche, he was that ideal combination of being good at what he did and being fun to work with, and he was always willing to share some wisdom. Dave left many fond memories with those he knew, and I hope you all can treasure those, knowing he awaits your arrival hopefully many years from now.

Dave and I worked together for many years at Roche, but he was a friend as well as a coworker. He was always entertaining and a joy to work with. My fellow "lab rats" and I could write a book of Dave stories. Sadly, we lost touch when he retired, but I thought about him often. RIP Dave. You were one of the good ones.

Dave Ashmore was more than a friend to my family. He was a beacon of light and understanding, shining forth with the faith that we sometimes failed to see. He could make me feel the presence of Jesus with just his smile. Thank you David, more than you know❤
