Deborah Kavey Obituary

Waltham – Debbie Kavey was warm, loving, kind and generous. She had a love for life and a love for her family even more. Debbie never missed a beat . . . described as always being busy and creative, whether it was helping her children with their school projects, coming up with new ideas for the Chatham Anglers merchandise stand, volunteering with the PTO or being a proud 'hockey Mom', Debbie was always the first to jump in to help . . . and she did so quietly and with a radiant smile. She was born on February 4, 1969, one of four daughters of Richard and Faith (Corcoran) Monahan. A lifelong resident of Waltham, she graduated from Waltham High in 1987. It was there she met her future husband and love of her life, John Kavey. She was a 1991 Boston College graduate earning a degree in Education; something that was both a skill and a passion for her. John and Debbie wed on July 17, 1999 at Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham and spent the next twenty happy years together. Mrs. Deborah E. (Monahan) Kavey, of Waltham, died on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a bout with cancer. She died the way that she lived . . . with strength, grace, candor, humility, a heart filled with love, and a deep and abiding faith. She was 50. During the school year she worked with the Waltham Public School system as an elementary teacher for thirteen years before becoming a full time mom when her children were young. Growing up Debbie spent summers in Chatham enjoying laughs and creating memories with her parents and sisters – a tradition they continued every summer with their own families. She loved her work and her students, but she always looked forward to spending time 'down the Cape'. She ran the Chatham Anglers merchandise stand where she became well-known in Cape Cod Baseball League circles. In addition to her husband John, and her parents, Dick and Faith, she leaves her children, Jack, Richard and Caroline E. Kavey, all of Waltham; her sisters, Kathleen Olsen of Rutland, Vermont, Mary E. DeCharia of Waltham and Joan Streeter of Darien, Connecticut; her father and mother-in-law, Robert and Veronica Kavey of Waltham; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen, Robert, Joseph, Patrick and Ann Marie Kavey and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will honor and remember Debbie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, January 1st from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Donations in her memory may be made to a fund established to aid her family: http://gofundme.com/debbiekavey

Tonight I learned of Debbie's passing when I bumped into Joan at the Anglers baseball game. I am so terribly sorry and sad. Debbie and I worked together ( along with Joan and Kathy) many , many years ago at Sea In The Rough restaurant in Chatham. Debbie was always so full of joy and laughter. Her smile could light up a room. I have thought of her often over the years and my heart is truly broken to learn of her death. Please know that I am thinking of you all and sending my condolences to her husband, children, Joan, Kathy and Mr. & Mrs. Monahan.

Hi John, Richard, Faith and all family members.
I am so sorry to hear the sad news. I remember Debbie from Cape Cod being always so full of life when John Daly and I were working on Mark and Joan's house in Chatam across the street from Richard and Faith's.
I only just found out today Jan 4th.
A friend of mine from Waltham Shelia Corcoran informed me today, now living in NC.
She was good friends with the Monahan girls.
My deepest sympathies and Debbie will be in my prayers.

Monahan/Kavey Family,
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know that words can't come close to easing any of the pain you are all feeling. Debbie was always the life of the party with a laugh and a smile that made you feel right at home. You weren't a stranger when Debbie was around. My heart breaks for her parents, sisters and husband but especially for her children. I know that there will be so many memories they have and will be told, but not having their amazing mother with them is so tragic. I'm so sorry that cancer has taken her from you all. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time and beyond.
With love,
Deborah Schmidt

Sometimes it's the smallest things that make the biggest difference in someone's life. This is how I will always remember Debbie. Her smile could brighten your day, and it always did. I soon found this out when my daughter Demi started school in her kindergarten class at Northeast Elementary. The transition to full day school was hard for Demi on some days, but Debbie Kavey had the perfect solution for her... a quick call home to me so she could say hi to me was all Demi needed to quickly turn her day around. This only happened 2 or 3 times the whole year, but that simple act made a huge difference for my daughter (and me as well!). Debbie's smile was contagious, and she was always so happy no matter what was going on in her life. I remember complaining to her about how I hated the rainy streak we were having at the time and how depressing it was, and her reply was not for the ducks! She always looked at the positive bright side of things. Then I was lucky enough to have her move into my neighborhood just in time for her son Jack and my daughter Dominique to be preschool age friends together. We had so many play dates at her house where she ALWAYS kept ingredients on hand for a batch of her homemade chocolate chip cookies to be made. Everything she did, she did to perfection. She will never be replaced in the many lives she touched, and I am so blessed my life was touched by her presence.

The James family offers our condolences to The Kavey and The Monahan family.

We have fond memories of Debbie...........My son Kevin was in her first grade class @ Banks School........way back in 1991. It was a lively class with some really wild kids. Debbie excelled and although thrown into that wild class, she ruled the roost and taught them well!!! That Spring, we ran into Debbie and friends on a cruise on "The Norway". We felt so badly that our son searched her out at almost every waking moment, crimping her fun with her friends. She was a good sport and Kevin still talks of "Remember when we cruised with Miss Monahan?"

God rest Debbie's soul and God bless all she left behind.
She was a lovely, kind and fun woman.

Dear Debbie's family, I am shocked and devastated by Debbie's passing. She was a sweet, lovable second grader when she was in my class at Banks School. Many years later she became a second grade teacher at Northeast and was right across the hall from me. She was a joy to work with. She came to school with a smile every day. She was loved by students and faculty alike. She always insisted on calling me Mrs. Davis.
The works was a better place because of a Debbie.
