Dorothy Frances (Dvorak) Henshaw Rubesh was born September 22, 1922 in Scio to Valadie and Salbena (Kukacka) Dvorak. God called her home on August 3, 2016. Dorothy moved to Mill City and then Albany as a child. She attended Maple Grade School, Central School, and Albany High School. She was a queen at Albany High and became the 1940 queen of the Strawberry Fair in Lebanon. She was quite athletic and competed in jumping, hurdles and other track sports. She played on a ladies softball team called the Truax Oilers. She married her high school sweetheart, Chet Henshaw in Raymond, Washington on January 29, 1943. They lived in Long Beach, Washington until Chet was transferred into the Airborne Division and they moved to Columbus, Georgia and then North Carolina. She came home to Albany when Chet went overseas. Dorothy graduated from the Oregon College of Beauty in Salem and worked in several shops. Dorothy and Chet had 2 children, Charyl Jean and Mark Rodney. Mark lived to be 8 months old. Chet died August 27, 1978. Five years later, on December 29, 1983, she married Edward L. Rubesh in Reno, Nevada. Edward died on December 5, 2012. Dorothy was active all her life. She was a Brownie Scout leader, member of the Junior Women's Club, chaperoned the Timber Carnival Court for 2 years, was involved in PTA, and did all kinds of crafts. She enjoyed ceramics, tole painting, crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Dorothy also belonged to the Birthday Club and Oak Creek Thursday Club. She loved her yard and enjoyed working in it. She loved collecting stuffed animals, repairing and washing them, and would deliver them to the fire department who would distribute them to needy children at Christmas. She attended the Congregational Church of the Valley and the United Church of Christ and served on several committees. She also collected angels. In later life, she loved going to Spirit Mountain Casino on the bus with her friends. She is survived by her daughter, Charyl James and husband Darrell; stepson, Ed Rubesh and wife Mary Lou; stepson-in-law, Roy Humphrey; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Her nieces and nephews were special to her too. She called her nieces "her girls." Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Valadie and Salbena Dvorak; son, Mark Rodney; husband, Chet Henshaw; husband, Ed Rubesh, and stepdaughter, Marlene Humphrey. A viewing will be from 4pm – 6pm, Tuesday, August 9th at Fisher Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10:00am, Wednesday, August 10th at Fisher Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Doernbecher Children's Hospital or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. SW, Albany, OR 97321. Donations may also be made to the charity of one's choice.
