Mr. Edward L. Ivy, Jr., age 80, of Wilmington, DE died on January 11, 2011 at St Francis Compassionate Care Hospice, Wilmington, DE. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1930, Ed spent his childhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil until heading to the University of Virginia in 1948. After graduating with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 1952, he married Alice May Mearns in 1953. The couple moved to Plainsfield, NJ where Ed started his 40-year career with Esso Standard Oil Company. From 1955-57 Ed was drafted into the Army where he served in the Rocket Development Division in Huntsville, AL on the development of the Polaris missile. After the service Ed returned to work with Esso/Exxon, where he and his family lived in various parts of the world, including London, Rio, Short Hills, NJ and Houston. In 1974 he and his family moved to Wilmington, DE where they have remained. In retirement Ed earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from the University of Delaware. He volunteered extensively in Creative Grandparenting, Literacy Volunteers and was an active Rotarian. He was also an avid golf, tennis and paddle tennis player. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Alice M. Ivy; children, E. Lee Ivy, III (Cindy), Herbert B. Ivy (Deborah), Alice I. Barnett (Ted), Carroll Ivy Laurence, Jackie Ivy (Sally); eleven grandchildren, Devin, Tommy, Allie, TJ, Nicky, Zak, Emma, Alejandra, Max, Olivia and Lucy; his brother David E. Ivy (Jo Ann) of Sao Paulo, Brazil, nephew David, niece Laura and grand-niece Luiza. The family would like to thank all of their friends and family for their tremendous love and support. They would also like to especially thank Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis for their unending support, friendship, and loving care of Ed during his final days. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 505 E. Buck Road, Greenville, DE (www.christchurchde.org). In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Ed Ivy can be made to either the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research; Church Street Station; PO Box 780; New York, NY 10008, or the Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis; c/o Compassionate Care, 702B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
