Gerald Maravetz Obituary

Passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at his home in Vienna, Va. He is preceded by his sister Phyllis Casey; brothers, marvin and Gabriel Maravetz and his loving wife Marie. Jerry, known to his grandchildren as "Bumps" is survived by his brother, Les (Kathy) Maravetz and sister, Eunice (Duane) Combs, his children, Glenn (Debbie) Maravetz and Jean (Bob) Johnson; his grandchildren, Molly, AnneMarie, Garrett, Emily and Grant and by companion Helen Zbornik, his "Pretty Lady". Jerry was born May 19, 1929 on the family farm in Schley, Iowa. He joined the United States Navy in 1949 and retired after 21 years in uniform as a Master Chief (CTACM). After military retirement Jerry continued to serve our country as a civilian USN employee, completing his total of 46 years of service in 1994 as the Deputy Inspector General of the Naval Security Group. Jerry was active in his community, filling many roles at St. Mark Catholic Church as well as logging many volunteer hours at Frying Pan Park restoring old farm equipment, giving hay rides and educating children about family farm life. The family will receive friends at St. Mark Catholic Church, 9970 Vale Rd., Vienna, Va on Saturday, February 21 from 10:00 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Luncheon will follow in the Church's Monsignor Cassidy Activity Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jerry's name to Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park, 2709 West Ox Rd., Herndon, Va 20171. Donations can be made online.
