Joe Scopacasa Obituary

Published by Forest Lawn - Glendale on Jan. 20, 2023.
Joe was born in a small town in Italy called Bovalino Superiore in the region of Calabria. His younger brother Jim was also born there in 1930. They lived with their parents Maria and Francesco, and their Grandmother Filomena. Francesco emigrated to the US in 1925, settling in Los Angeles, California. Maria and the two boys emigrated to the US in 1946 to join Francesco, where Joe's two youngest brothers Mario (1947) and Frank (1948) were born. Joe spoke no English when they came to the US, yet he studied hard, and graduated in the top half of his class from Belmont High School in Los Angeles in 1949. After high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force, and served for 3 years. Once Joe was honorably discharged from the Air Force, he got a job working for Farmers and Merchants Bank (which eventually became Bank of America) as a busboy in the employee cafeteria. He worked for Bank of America for 38 years, working his way up to becoming a loan officer when he retired. He received two certificates from The American Institute of Banking while there. He met his wife Mary while working at the bank. They married in 1958, and were married for 5 years. They had a daughter, Tina, born in 1959. Joe was an announcer for Hawthorne Little League, where his youngest two brothers and nephew played baseball. Joe lived in Hawthorne for many years, and loved tennis. He played in many local tournaments, receiving a number of trophies. He lived most of his life in Glendale, where he was very involved in the community. He ran for Glendale City Council in 1999 . He loved people, and spent a lot of his free time walking around Glendale. He greeted everyone he met with a warm smile and hello. The people in his condo complex called him "Uncle Joe". He especially loved children, and collected toys to give to them when they came by to see him. He walked from his home every day to the Lexus dealer in Glendale, and became their "greeter", offering pastries to clients, and keeping the place clean and tidy. He made lifelong friends with many of the employees there. He also kept the Glendale sidewalks clean, picking up litter daily. He was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2011 for his efforts. In 2020, Joe moved into an assisted living facility; Mariposa at Ellwood Shores in Goleta, CA. Joe is survived by his daughter Tina, grandchild Kaelin, brother Frank, sisters-in-law Kathy and Priscilla, nieces Anna, Linda, and Jenny, and nephews Richard and Tom. He was preceded in death by his parents Maria and Francesco, brothers Jim and Mario, sister-in-law Evelyn, and nephew Tony. Joe,

I'm forever grateful to have known you. 21 years was not long enough. I always used to says to you "They don't make men like you anymore" and you would laugh. This was and is true in every aspect. No one I know had your heart. You were always so positive, loving, caring, and everything in-between. You never forgot a birthday or a holiday. You smiled at everyone you encountered and never said anything negative about anyone. I will miss you so much but my heart is full because I knew you. Thank you for including me in your Glendale community functions and I will keep the memories with me forever. Everytime I drink wine, I think of you. I will be your forever date. Rest in paradise. ❤

Thank you Uncle Joe for brightening up our lives, you always brought joy to every occasion. Silly jokes, hugs, always interested in how things were going, playing with the kids, Salute!, birthday cards every year, tennis, that Opel, wine, and some Italian. Those are some of the things I remember. May you rest in peace.

Joe. ”Uncle Joe” is what we called him at Lexus of Glendale even though we were not blood related. We looked forward every day to seeing him. Uncle Joe knew all of us and our birthdays . We would get candy or cookies , a birthday card along with a birthday song sung to us. We also celebrated his birthdays with him by taking him to dinner and showering him with gifts. Uncle Joe was always included in our work events, our Christmas parties , along with our get togethers after work. He was a HUGE part of our lives . When Covid hit , his presence was extremely missed not only by employees, but by guests as well. Joe was a true example of “ LOVE” he loved everybody and everybody loved him. I loved him like my own dad. We were close and I thank God we stayed in touch after he moved from Glendale. We talked every week. Either he called or I called him. When I couldn’t reach him I would call Tina to check on him. I I am so happy I was able to drive to Goleta to visit him. I will always cherish our visit especially when he grab my hand and said” I love you Yvonne”. That touched my heart because he could barely speak . I will forever hold him dear in my heart just like everybody at Lexus of Glendale will. He was a true example of LOVE. An amazing man in deed. We will miss forever. Rest in God’s Love uncle Joe. My Uncle Joe was the oldest of 4 boys in our family. My dad was the second oldest. Uncle Joe had a big heart. He loved playing with all the kids in our family. He was an excellent tennis player and never seemed to slow down. He loved our big Italian family gatherings and always showed up to all of our birthday parties. His only child is Tina. She takes after him with having a big heart and always so kind to others. I'm so very proud of her of how she took care of my dear Uncle Joe. Rest in peace as you are finally home with Our Lord and your parents and brothers. Look down on us and pray for the rest of the Scopacasa family.
