Dr. Paul E. Anuta of LaPlata, Maryland, formerly of Lafayette, died Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. He was born December 26, 1935 in Menominee, Michigan, the son of the late Edward R. and Geraldine Shriner Anuta. His early childhood was spent in Peshtigo, Wisconsin and his family moved in 1940 to McCormick Road in West Lafayette. Dr. Anuta graduated in 1953 from Klondike High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1957. He continued his studies and received a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1962 and a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from Purdue University in 1967. Dr. Anuta received a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue in 1985. Dr. Anuta was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Signal Corps. He was married on August 24, 1969 in LaPorte, Indiana to Diana Darling and she survives. Dr. Anuta specialized in the research and development of data processing technology and digital representation of remote sensing data. He has authored numerous scientific publications advancing the science of satellite and machine recognition systems. Dr. Anuta was a guidance and control system engineer for IBM Federal Systems Devision in Oswego, NY from 1957 to 1966 where his research team developed Titan rocket guidance systems. In 1967, he joined the Laboratory for the Application of Remote Sensing (LARS) in West Lafayette where the development team advanced the science of satellite recognition for agricultural, commercial, and military purposes. His work on digital image processing for remote sensing was presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute proceeding in 1980 in Bonas, France. Dr. Anuta was employed by Jet Propulsion Laboraties in Pasadena, California, by several government contractors including Research and Data Systems Corporation, Titan Systems Corporation and L3 Communications and most recently for Lockheed Martin in Washington D.C as a systems engineer. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, Good Samaritan Presbyterian Church in Waldorf, MD and a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Lafayette. Dr. Anuta and his wife, Dr. Diana Darling, were breeders of Borzois (Russian wolfhounds) and participated in many events nationwide. He was fascinated by trains and the loved exploring the many natural beauties of the United States. His hobbies included traveling, hiking, and painting. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Diana Darling of LaPlata, MD, two sons, Adam (wife: Kristen) Anuta-Darling of Woodbridge, VA and Austin Anuta-Darling of LaPlata, MD, one granddaughter Anabelle, one sister, Judith Anuta McFadden of Surprise, AZ, and two brothers, David A. (wife: Peggy) Anuta of Marco Island, FL and Phillip M. Anuta of Vernon Hills, IL Friends may call Friday 5-8 PM at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Services Saturday 1:00 PM at Hippensteel Funeral Home with interment to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
