Mr. Seneter Morgan Maclaury Ottoway "MUTT" Pygatt was born September 28, 1928 in Florence County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Julius Clinton Pigatt and Ozella Frierson Pigatt. He departed this life on May 13, 2009 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, South Carolina.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having honorably served under General Douglas McArthur during the Korean War. His area of expertise was the Signal Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1953. He was educated in the Public Schools of Florence County. Upon graduation, he furthered his education at the South Carolina Area Trade School, now known as Denmark Technical College, in Denmark, South Carolina. His area of concentration was Radio and Television Technology.
"MUTT", as all who knew him fondly called him, opened one of the first Black owned businesses in Florence, Pygatt's Radio and TV Repair. His knowledge of televisions gained him respect among the business community. His wide and vast know-how enabled him to share his wisdom with many others and spread his "fame" across the county and state.
"MUTT" was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mattie Mae Odom on January 18, 1956.
He was a lifelong member of Meadow Prong Baptist Church where he served without fail until his passing. He was a member of the Trustee Board and also served as Sunday School teacher. He served on several advisory councils at his church as well as in the community.
"MUTT'S" other passion centered around Baseball. The Coastal Athlete League was formed and he was one of the Co-Host during a Saturday morning Radio Show on the WYNN Radio Station in Florence, South Carolina.
"MUTT" was predeceased by his son, Morgan Scott; three grandchildren; his sisters, Osenia P. McCullough, Lee Ella P. Lewis and Lois P. Ham; and his brothers, Bill Frierson, Galentee, Boyd, Brooks, Fred, and Laythop Pigatt.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 53 years, Mattie Mae Odom Pygatt of the home; his children, Terry Sanders of Bridgeport, CT; Cynthia (Frank) Gaskins of Florence, SC; Carver Scott and Rebecca Johnson Hill of Patterson, NJ; and Allen Hayes of Florence, SC; thirty-one grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one brother, James (Radia) Pigatt of Erwin, NC; two sisters, Olivia Senter of Englewood, NJ; and Doretha Hannah of Washington, DC.
He is also survived by: his sisters-in-law, Azalee Pigatt, Florence Pigatt, Willie Mae Frierson, Elease Green, Rosanna Wilcher; his brothers-in-law, Cephus Odom and Phillip Odom; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
