Tammi Mallos Obituary

Tammi S. Mallos, 59 of Richland, MI passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022 after a nearly 8-year battle with cancer. Tammi was born in Caledonia, MN, on January 17, 1963 to Duane and Marlene Howard. She grew up in Fountain, MN and attended high school in Rochester, MN. Following high school, Tammi graduated with a dual degree in Marketing and Music from Mankato State University. She moved to Milwaukee, WI to pursue a career in marketing of sheet music at Hal Leonard Publishing. In Milwaukee she met her future husband, Mike Mallos and they were married on September 22, 1990. Tammi and Mike came to the Kalamazoo, MI area where Tammi earned her master's degree in education at Western Michigan University and began a 30-year vocation of teaching and mentoring young adults. For many of these years she taught a hospitality related careers course and every year would orchestrate a trip for her students to Disney World in Florida for behind-the-scenes education in their operations. Tammi was instrumental in teaching her students many life skills like, resume writing, CPR training, interviewing for a job, food safety certification, and self-discipline. Tammi, Mike, and their two children moved to Richland, MI in 2005. Tammi has always had a love for animals and fostered that love in her children. While in Richland, she and Mike built pastures at their house to quarter several horses over many years. Tammi would be up every day (rain/shine/snow/freezing temps) at 5:30AM to feed the horses before going to school. She also lived the vocation of raising and supporting her children in everything they were doing. Whether it be sports, academics, or relationships, she was always there for them and their friends. One of her greatest joys was watching as the children grew into the smart, caring, and responsible young adults that they are. More recently, she and Mike moved to Gull Lake where they enjoyed spending time hiking, boating, and soaking up the sun. Tammi will forever be remembered by her beautiful smile, selfless giving, and endless love for all of us lucky enough to meet her. Tammi is survived by her husband, Mike Mallos of Richland; children, Demitrius (Teri) Mallos of Schaumburg, IL and Nikki Mallos of Richland, MI; sisters, Renee White of Sacramento, CA, and Diane Howard of Rochester, MN; brothers, Dana (Sherry) Howard of Milford, DE, David (Pam) Peterson of Altoona, WI, and Jim Peterson of Klamath Falls, MN; nieces, Courtney Howard of Nashville, TN, Candace Howard of Nashville, TN, and Christa Howard of Milford, DE; nephews, Josh Keep of Rochester, MN, and Christian Howard of Columbus, OH. She was preceded in death by parents Marlene and Bob Peterson and Duane Howard; grandparents Dale and Evelyn Besse, Selma and Peter Howard. Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 30th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue (M-89), Richland, MI 49083 where a memorial service to celebrate Tammi's life will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 31st. Tammi was a beautiful person inside and out. My daughter, Annie, had her for the Hospitality EFA a few years back and was lucky enough to travel to Walt Disney World with her :) Annie has wonderful memories from that time spent with Tammi and is so grateful for having known her.

I was also lucky to have known Tammi through Portage Public Schools. I saw her earlier this year and we spoke for awhile :) I am so sorry for all your loss-she made this world a better place and we are blessed having known her!

My friend, Tami. She was to out-live me. Did I ever tell her that each time I hear Fleetwood Mac I think of her? During our undergrad years in Mankato Minnesota, Tami lived with Terry and David. Tami was often playing her guitar and singing Fleetwood Mac songs upstairs when I arrived. She usually sounded great. But even she tired of the same music over and over, so she asked me for new music to copy by ear. I gave her Shawn Phillips, Second Contribution. He was new to Tami and was her new obsession. We didn't have money, Spring Break was a trip to the frozen tundra of the North Shore of Lake Superior with 3 other friends. We sang the whole way up, making up the lyrics. We went with no reservations and were nearly to Canada before we found a cabin with an opening. It was dark, late, and cold. But it turned out to be a very memorable trip. We had a fun group of friends. For the Vets Day Raft Race in Mankato, we built an oversized raft that disqualified us from the race. We had a tent and toilet in the middle. Tami was floating on an inner tube tied to the raft when we crashed and the raft broke into pieces, pinning Tami under water. Another friend dove under and freed Tami. I think we both grew wiser since then. We were in each other's weddings. Life took us in different directions, but we stayed in touch, seeing each other occassionally. When we got together, it was the same old Tami. So very serious on some topics and so silly otherwise. Uniquely Tami. It is easy for me to understand why Tami asked Mike not to share her battle with us. We would have been helples sand she would not welcome pity. Tami has left her mark on teh world. I am grateful for her impact on my life.

Brad put a tent in the center of it with a toilet. Tami was floating on an inner tube tied to the raft when we crashed and the raft broke up. Tami was pinned underwater. Sherry dived under and helped her up. We grew smarter since then, I think. We were in each other’s weddings. Life took us in different directions, but we stayed good friends. When we got together, she was the same old Tami. So serious on some topics and so silly otherwise. Uniquely Tami.

Every time I see another photo of Tammi, I don't know whether to smile or tear-up. We have so many photos with her as she has been part of David's and my life since even before college days and she will hold a place in my heart for the rest of my life. As David said in his post, she was like his little sister, well, and for me too. One memory only she and I shared was when we lived together during college. She could never wake up to an alarm clock so she enlisted me to run upstairs to her bedroom and get her out of bed. Then I would race down to the one shower we all shared and jump in ahead of her so I would be on time to class. She would give me 5 minutes and then strip naked and get in the shower with me laughing the whole time. Of course, I proceeded to exit quickly which was her goal. Who on earth would do something like that except funny and lovable Tamm? My sweet Tammi.

Tammi was such a solid person and encouragement to all of us, bringing guidance, stability and sacrificial love into our lives. No matter what was going on, she was always willing to listen and offer help. When others were unable to step up, Tammi climbed the ladder and went over the top. She was brave, determined, strong, unwavering and consistent. She was a "solid rock" for her siblings, even though she was the youngest. All who had the privilege of meeting her, sensed she genuinely cared for the well being of others, seeking to brighten up their day. She'd offer to pay for your meals, a trip, take you on a horseback or boat ride, etc. "Little Sis, you fought the good fight until the very end and Ill miss you dearly. Thanks for always being there, nobody will ever replace you. We got along so well. Love you forever." --- Your brother

I had the pleasure of knowing Tammi through the 4-H horse project. She had the warmest smile and kindest heart. She was always willing to help anyone in any way. We then saw Tammi at an EFE event and learned she was an educator, which was a perfect role for her. Even as she battled cancer, she never lost her smile and joy. We were blessed to know her and send deepest condolences to you.

Mrs. Mallos was the most amazing teacher, she was always there when I needed someone to talk to but mostly when I was stressed about my classes, she talked me through it and always told me that everything was going to be okay. Mrs. Mallos was the sweetest person ever, she always had a smile on her face no matter what and it lit up everyone's day! My heartfelt condolences to the family. <3

The thing I looked forward to the most on the first day back to school was getting to see Tammi. We used every free moment to catch up on life and family. Tammi adored her children and husband and she would light up whenever she talked about them. My students that also had Mrs. Mallos loved their time with her and always had wonderful things to say about her. I cherish the perfect day spent with her on the boat on Gull lake. I will so miss her beautiful smile and great life advice. Tammi was the kindest soul. My heartfelt condolences to her family.

My sincere condolences to the Mallos family on the loss of such a wonderful woman, wife, mother, sister, and daughter. Having known Tammi for 40 years, and having her room with my wife and I through college, she is more of a family member to us than a friend. She was like our little sister. Tammi's laugh and smile were so infectious. She never had anything bad to say about anyone. Nor did anyone have anything but positive comments about her.

Thank you Tammi for enriching our lives. You will be so missed. Rest In Peace Dear!

I have so many wonderful memories of Tammi. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to live with Mike and Tammi when I moved to Kalamazoo. One of my best memories was when I was managing my first project which was going day and night on West Main in Kalamazoo and was very close to their house. Tammi would drop off casseroles and various meals on the job to me. She always made sure I was well fed.

The Mallos family brought me into their family along with the other managers at Globe Construction many years ago. I'm so thankful for their generosity and love. I learned so much about life from them! My prayers are that God brings peace to Mike, Demitrius, and Nikki and for them to know how much they are loved. You all mean the world to me.

My dear friend, Tammi! The giggles & talks we shared over our long friendship wont ever be far from my heart! I admired everything about you - your carefree attitude, connection with nature, honesty, and soft & sweet manner of handling literally every situation that came your way. I know that you lived a life of gratitude, always speaking about how lucky you were to have such a wonderful husband & two amazing children. You knew how to keep life simple but sincere, choose a smile over a tear & cherish life's adventures. How lucky I am that our husbands' lifelong friendships brought us together as well. Ron, Cleyton, Connor & I will be forever there for your family.

We have many fond memories of Tammi during basketball tennis and volleyball, and more recently in supper club. It was awesome seeing Tammi come zooming over on her wave runner to our dock, always sporty and smiling and sharing her love of Gull Lake. We are going to miss her so much. May God wrap you in His love and comfort you. May you know how much we all love her and your beautiful family. We shall never ever forget our friend, your mom and wife.
