Though the world may seem a bit darker now, I can't help but believe Bill's light is still shining on us from the great beyond. I feel truly blessed to have shared the stage with this remarkable man. My deepest condolences to the Swinny family. RIP.

Bill Swinny was one of my most favorite teachers at AHHS. He would always tell us "GK kids, GK" long before Trivial Pursuit made it a category. These GK moments and factoids brought to light by him helped shape me and my quest to continue learning through life. The Swinny family are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Bill was an amazing man and positively impacted so many lives!

In addition to beng directed by Mr Swinny in our Senior Class edition of Bye Bye Birdie, I had the pleasure of being a stage hand in a San Antonio Little Theater production of Tevye and His Daughters in which Mr Swinny played the lead. What a gifted, effervescent man he was! What a pleasure it is to have memories of him!!!

Mr. Swinny made everything more fun, inspiring and sometimes, a little scary but in a good way. He pushed you to give your best performance every single day. He had an extraordinary way of bringing out the best in his students. I will never forget his big, booming laugh! He was my very favorite teacher. What a fine man.

Here are some excerpts from a letter that I recently sent to Bill Swinny. I am sharing them here so all of us who cared about him can see how important he was to me:
You probably don't remember me as a freshman in your English class 1961-62, but it was a very important time for me. I entered your class after having a hard time in junior high, and being at a low point. My family situation had been pretty chaotic and I ended up almost failing two junior high classes. For that reason, I wasn't allowed to continue in the Major Works English classes in high school. So I ended up in your class, which was apparently one of the regular English classes at the time.
I doubt that you were aware of any of those things about me, but somehow you were able to support me through this difficult and vulnerable period and help me to work through my demoralization to begin to feel good about myself and my abilities.
I can't even tell you exactly what it was that you did or said other than that I remember defining words in class and realizing I wasn't so stupid after all! I think it was more your ability to care about your students and see beyond the superficial that was the most important. I will never forget this gift of your understanding. You will always be a very special person for me.
I have had a lot of challenges in my life in my schooling, career and elsewhere. I feel that through these I have always carried within me the gift of just keeping trying, not giving up, and believing in myself that you helped me to learn at such a young age.
Thanks so much.

I came to AH as a teacher with six years experience in 1974. The first name I heard at teacher in-service was Bill's. When the Junior School drama program nearly died, I took it on to avoid its extinction, I had no idea what I was doing. Bill came over to help me, generously giving of his time and talent .
Play that great stage in heaven, Bill. You're going to get rave reviews!

I learned so much about myself and overcame my fear of public speaking under his direction in the AHHS senior play some 37 years ago. His talent and dedication as a teacher has served me well. Thanks, Mr. Swinny.

What a blessing Mr. Swinny was to all who knew him. My dad had died my senior year of high school and it was being in the the senior class play and working with Bill that enabled me to get through the last few months of high school. Thank you for sharing him with us.
