MARION – James Stanley "Jimmy" Overbay, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home early Saturday morning, Sept. 3, 2005 after a lengthy illness, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on May 17, 1924 in Marion, a son of the late Arthur and Grace Powell Overbay. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served for 20 years, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired from active duty in 1963 as a Master Sergeant. He and his family then moved back to Marion, where he was employed by the Brunswick Corporation for 23 years until his retirement in 1987. He was a talented guitarist, enjoyed fishing and gardening, and was a licensed amateur radio operator. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Marion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judie Overbay Goodman; three brothers, Johnny Overbay, Ted Overbay and Buford "Tooney" Overbay.
Mr. Overbay is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Hazel Poston Overbay of Marion; one daughter, Barbara Overbay of Marion, who was his dedicated, loving caregiver for the last two-and-a-half years; two sons, James S. "Jim" Overbay II and Floyd Arthur "Artie" Overbay, both of Marion; one son-in-law, Denny Goodman of Marion; one sister, Ruth Pugh of Marion; two sisters-in-law, Debbie Overbay of Marion and Billie Poston of Tipp City, Ohio; four grandchildren, James Goodman, Audria Dexter, Jama Overbay and Andrea Overbay, all of Marion; six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Kimberly, Cody, Caleb, Collin and Crystal; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Sue Myers of Salem, Ruth Myers, Betty Hash and Sandy Dennison all of Marion, and Teresa Phillips of Chilhowie.
The family would like to thank the staff of Smyth Regional Home Care, with special thanks to Sallie Lefler, R.N., and Suzanne Davenport, C.N.A., and Dr. Jennifer Stiefel and staff, especially Mandi Vanhoozer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Lambert officiating. Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion, where military rites will be conducted by Francis Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 115 South Church Street, Marion, or to the Salvation Army, c/o Robert White, P.O. Box 451, Marion, VA 24354.
