ALVIS BURTON "BURT" MATTHEWS Hillcrest Memorial Center Alvis Burton "Burt" Matthews was born February 16, 1936 in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to Clarence and Vinlee Matthews. Burt had a peaceful return to his eternal home on April 3, 2017 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington. Burt attended Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas, where he met and later married his sweetheart, Barbara Jan on August 15, 1953. Burt was a well-respected journeyman electrician and a longstanding member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for over 55 years. In 1976, he moved his family from Costa Mesa, California to Richland, Washington to work at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation as a journeyman inside wireman on Washington Nuclear Projects 1,2,4 and the Fast Flux Test Facility. The last 11 years of his career were spent working in the California Bay Area. Burt and Jan returned to Richland in 1994 for a well-deserved retirement. As an avid outdoorsman, Burt had a love for Eastern Washington and its endless fields and abundant waterways. Whether it was chasing upland birds, or fishing for walleye, he had it mastered. That same mastery and love for the outdoors was passed down to his five sons who will dearly miss his teachings and companionship. In addition to the outdoors, Burt enjoyed time spent in his shop working with wood and creating some of the most beautiful and original pieces of art imaginable while listening to any tune played by his hero, Marty Robbins. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Jan Matthews, and their sons: Montgomery Alan (Gloria) Burton Douglas (Sheila) Scott Michael (Nina) Clarence Jeffrey (Wanda) and Alvis Brian (Hope). He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Goodbrake of Dickinson, Texas and Mary Suiter of Chaparral, New Mexico. He also had 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Vinlee Matthews, and his special grandson, Sean Matthews. A private memorial service with be held for family members.
