BARBARA JEAN OWNBEY Our mother, Barbara Jean Ownbey, 74 years old, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2016 in Tacoma, WA. She was born in Ft. Peck, MT on May 25, 1942 to Bernice and Samuel Rhyneer. She arrived earlier than expected and had open heart surgery at 18 to repair a congenital heart defect. She used to tell us that we were miracle babies. Growing up she never thought she would be able to have children nor live very long. All who met our mom loved her too. She was kind and believed in us. She would check in with us to see if we wanted her to be openly cheering us on or behind the scenes support. She was frequently called Mom by our peers and would lend a listening ear to those who needed one. We remember Mom's infectious laugh and the giggle fits we frequently had at the dinner table. Mom graduated from Richland's Columbia High School in 1961, and then went on to secretarial school in Spokane, WA. She attended Washington State College for a brief time where she met our Dad. Mom and Dad were married in 1964 at Richland Lutheran Church. They moved to Seattle where she was involved in PTA, earning a Golden Acorn Award and the Green River Glass Club. She is survived by her brother, Dr. George Rhyneer (Marilyn McKay), Eagle River, AK, daughters Tanja Kay Ownbey, Tacoma, WA and Tamara Ann Carlton (Todd), Battle Creek, MI, and grandchildren Danielle Horn, Portland, OR, Patricia Munn (Michael), Arlington, TX, Lawrence Fenton (Edgar Ayala), Arlington, TX, Anders Horn (Delecia Loper), Albany, OR and Marshal Horn (Naomi), Lebanon, OR, and the father of her children, David Ownbey, Seattle, WA. Memorial services will be held in May in Tacoma, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Peace Lutheran Community Center, Tacoma, WA.
