GRETA (GRIETJE) WEENINK Einan's at Sunset Greta (Grietje) Weenink, age 91 died peacefully surrounded by her family December 19, 2016 in Richland, Washington. She was born September 30, 1925 in Roosendaal, The Netherlands to Garrit and Albertje Siepel. She spent her early years in Neede. She attended school and helped her father raise her younger brother Jan, as their mother had died in childbirth. In 1948 she married Hendrik Weenink and right after the war took a freighter to America the land of opportunity. They arrived in Ellis Island in November of that year with $36 and limited English. The first five years were spent in New Jersey and North Carolina before heading west to Washington. In Sunnyside they purchased their first dairy and started raising their six children. Greta spent many hours alongside her husband building a successful dairy operation. In 1958 she proudly became a U.S. citizen but never forgetting her Dutch roots. After retiring from the farm, she attended florist school and started a new 25 year career. From Morris Floral in Sunnyside to Shelby's Floral in Kennewick, she worked until she was 80. Cookies and tea were always at the ready whenever family, friends or even strangers would stop in. Her grace and hospitality are a legacy we cherish. Her unselfishness was evident when in 1975 she donated her kidney to her oldest son. Her proudest achievement was her family; all of her six children felt they were her favorite. Greta was a lifelong member of Christian Reformed Church and attended Family of Faith Church in Kennewick. She is survived by Johan Weenink of Richland; Betty (David) Thompson of Vancouver, WA; Gary (Jamie) Weenink of Sunnyside, WA; Jane (Max) Stafford of Bremerton, WA; Rick (Diana) Weenink of Benton City, WA; Ed (Tammy) Weenink of Bothell, WA; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Greta is also survived by her brother, Jan (Maya) Siepel of Bennekom, The Netherlands; sister-in-law, Mini Weenink of Haarlo, Netherlands; brother-in-law, Emo Knibbe of Toronto, Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hendrick, three sisters and one granddaughter.
