JOEL MATHIS VAN SANT V Hillcrest Memorial Center Joel Mathis Van Sant V, 66, of Kennewick, passed away on Thursday June 23, 2016 at the Kadlec Medical Center. Joel was born on October 19, 1949 in Raton, NM. to Joel Nicholas and Mary (Foy) Van Sant. After graduating from High School he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a submariner during the Vietnam War. After his discharge he traveled extensively working in various jobs as he went. He settled in the Tri Cities in 1989 and worked for Hanford as a chemical technologist, then for Home Depot as a kitchen designer. He retired from Home Depot in 2014. Joel enjoyed many varied hobbies; he was an avid golfer, enjoyed dancing and singing. He was known for his BBQ expertise, he enjoyed reading, movies and poolside tanning. Joel was in the middle of writing his biography, a long running labor of love. Joel was a jack of all trades; he was good at anything he tried. He will be remembered as a people person; he never met a stranger and enjoyed talking and celebrating with everyone he met. He would help anyone who needed it by being supportive and kind. He was charming and charismatic. Joel's best days were spent with his friends and family partying, laughing, and talking. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Brandyn (Sharon) Van Sant and his daughter Monique Van Sant, a sister Gretchen (Monty) Heyer nephew Scott (Stephanie) Heyer and great nieces and nephews. Joel's life will be celebrated at the Columbia Community Church at 150 Gage Blvd. Richland at 1:00PM on Tuesday June 28. Memorials are suggested to the in Joel's name.
