JOSEPH LEONARD CLEPPE (JOE) Joseph Leonard Cleppe (Joe) passed away peacefully on June 10 with his family at his side. He would have turned 96 later this month. Joe was born to Joseph and Marie Cleppe in Luverne, Minnesota. He lived and worked on the farm where he and his two brothers and two sisters were raised. At age 16, he traveled cross country with his best friend and soon-to-be brother-in-law to the Yakima Valley where he was a member of the first graduating class of Perry Trade School's automotive program. During WWII, Joe served in the Army Air Corps, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was trained as an airplane mechanic at many locations throughout the United States, including Boeing School of Aeronautics in Oakland, CA. He was stationed on Saipan and Tinian in the Mariana Islands of the North Pacific. In 1952, Joe and his wife Muriel moved to Richland in 1952 where he lived and worked and raised his family of seven children over the next 65 years. He was an avid reader who loved riding his horse and his motorcycles, activities he shared with all of his children. Many will remember him as the auto mechanic at the corner of Swift and Wright, the man who serviced their cars from the early 50s until he retired in 1993. Joe was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland and, at the time of his death, was the oldest member of the Richland Knights of Columbus; he was also a life member of the VFW. He is survived by sons Patrick Cleppe (Kathryn) and Michael Cleppe, both of Kennewick; daughters Joan O'Leary (Neil) of Alaska, Lorri Helgeson (Wes) of New Mexico, Lisa Berry (Barclay) of Stanwood, and Nancy Schille (David) of Snohomish; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brother Robert Cleppe, sister Ruth Townsend and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Muriel, son David, parents Joseph and Marie, sister, Helen Falon, and brother, Gerry Cleppe. The Rosary will be recited at Einan's Funeral Home Chapel 915 Bypass Highway Richland on Monday, June 19, at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be officiated by Monsignor Thomas Champoux at Christ the King Catholic Church Richland, WA on Tuesday, June 20, at 10:00 am. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm at Sunset Gardens Richland, WA. Express your thoughts and memories on our online Guestbook at www.einansatsunset.com
