RAMONA ANN NIELSEN MURRAY Ramona Ann Nielsen Murray, a sixty-four year resident of the Wenas Valley, was born March 22, 1929, in Upland Nebraska to Olga Johnson Nielsen and Niels C. Nielsen. She lost her struggle with diabetes and congestive heart failure on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the age of 88. Ram-ona was the youngest of her siblings, Lloyd, Rudy, Gene, Ruth Nielsen Dimond, and Lester, all of whom predeceased her. In 1937, the family left Nebraska and moved to Kennewick where Ramona later graduated from Kennewick High School in 1946. She married Austin James Murray in 1946, a handsome young farmer (seven years older) from Richland whom she met at a dance. Their first home was on a ridge above the Yakima River and across from Richland. During these years, three children were born to them: Jerrene, David and Pam. In 1953, the family moved from Richland to a ranch with dry sagebrush-covered hills and irrigated farmland where they raised cattle, hay, corn and mint in the Wenas Valley. Ramona was a true rancher's wife working right alongside Austin doing the multitude of chores. In 1968, their fourth child Valerie Jill was born. On June 7, 1996, Austin died after fifty- years of marriage leaving Ramona to live the next twenty-one years alone on the ranch, but with the support from family, friends, and great neighbors, she remained an active member of the community and especially the Central Washington Ag Museum. Survivors include her children: Jerrene Yochim (Steve), Dave Murray (Betty Jo), Pam Wickersham (Jim), Valerie Jill Yearout; grandchildren: Wendy and Cari Wickersham; Kim Tatro (Joe), Chris and Kevin Murray, Katie Yochim-Smith (Dylan), Austin & Morgan Yearout; great grandchildren: Alexia Needham, Brody Mullinnex, Jackson and Lucas Tatro; many nieces and nephews; special friends Buck & Marion Birge, Carol Schorr, and other friends and family so well-loved. Viewing will be on Wednesday, April 26, 1:00-8:00 pm, at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 W Yakima Ave, Yakima. The funeral service will also be at Keith and Keith on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception at 12:30 at the Naches Catholic Church. Memorials, if desired, may be sent to Central Washington Agricultural Museum in the care of Keith and Keith.
