RONALD JOSEPH MERTENS Ronald Joseph Mertens, age 65, of Pasco, Washington, died Monday, June 5, 2017 at his mother's house in Spokane Valley, WA after battling cancer. Ron was born August 13, 1951 in Spokane, WA, son of Alma Belisle and Robert Mertens (deceased). Ron is preceded in death by his daughter Karen Caldeira, survived by his sons Bradley (Danielle) Mertens and Brent Mertens; his four grandchildren Quintin, Hayley, Sage and Reagan; brothers Ray (twin) (Marilyn), Jerry (Judy), Tom and Doug (Lori): numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and their children. As a young man, Ron served his country in the US Marine Corps before transferring over to the Coast Guard where he retired honorably as a Reservist. Later in life, Ron wanted to serve his community and parish and became a deacon. He served the poor and brought light and life to others in need. Ron tirelessly gave his time and great cooking to the people of Tri-Cities. He loved to cook and to bake cookies and other goodies during the holidays. Ron also retired from the Federal Government after 30 + years of service. Rosary was Friday, June 9, at 7pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams, Spokane Valley. The funeral service was Saturday, June 10, at 11am also at St. Mary's. Burial service will be on Tuesday, June 13, at 10am at Holy Cross Cemetery, reserved for family and close friends. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Ron's name be given to a charity of your choosing or towards cancer research. A memorial Mass for Ron will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church, 7409 W. Clearwater, Kennewick, on Thursday, June 15, at 7:00 p.m. The rosary will be recited at 6:15 p.m.
