Clifford R. Birkestrand, 87, of Huxley, died Friday, March 6, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Services were held Monday, March 9, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley with Pastor Tim Maybee officiating. Burial was in the Fjeldberg Cemetery.
Clifford was born Aug. 16, 1921, to Albert (A.J.) and Anna Margaret (Johnson) Birkestrand. He graduated from White Oak High School in 1939. He married Maxine H. Mitchell on June 6, 1942, at the Fjeldberg Parsonage. He was baptized and confirmed at Fjeldberg. He worked as a farmer and also at the Alleman Co-op for 23 years. He retired in 1983. He was on the Cambridge School Board, the church council, drove a school bus and enjoyed playing basketball, making All-County in 1937.
He is survived by two sons: Kenneth (Joyce) of Huxley and Gary (Wanda) of Slater; one sister: JoAnn Gregg; 3 grandchildren: Steve Birkestrand, Heather Norris and Heidi Ihle; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, in 2004; brothers, John and Arnold; and a sister, Stella Carley.
Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home, Slater, handled arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.
