Larry French
Maxwell - Lawrence (Larry) Rae French was born on February 5, 1927. He was a longtime resident of Maxwell, IA. Larry married Kathryn (Kathy) Lovell on March 3, 1946 and celebrated 72 years of marriage before her death in 2018. He was, above all else, her beloved husband. Larry wore many hats throughout his life and in his community. He was a mechanic. He took apart and then reassembled his first car engine when he was 11 years of age and didn't stop until he was in his 70s. Larry owned "Larry's Auto Shop" for over 50 years. He had a wrecker service and during his lifetime pulled most of the cars in Story County and the surrounding area out of a ditch at one time or another. He served on the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, was an active member of the Lion's Club for many years, announced the high school football games. Larry was a licensed minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served a small congregation in St. Anthony, IA for over 20 years. He had an easy, crooked smile for everyone he met.
He and Kathy raised two daughters, Barb and Maribeth, as well as many "foster" children. They welcomed the Chimm family from a refugee camp in Thailand and have considered them children and grandchildren since. Larry was known to many of Kathy's pre-school students as "Cookie Monster."
Larry fixed, rescued, preached, counseled, married, buried and did it all with a very quiet, honest integrity. He was a patient and content man who appreciated life's small graces, kindnesses and decencies. And he missed his wife and girls dearly.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Iva (Sipling) French, his wife Kathy, his daughters, Barbara Evans and Maribeth Pollard and his sister, Lois Mae Olsan. He is survived by his grandchildren, Laura Evans Mahn (Jason) of Rock Island, IL and David Evans of Raleigh, NC; great grandsons, Asa and Gabriel, and many "foster" children.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rolling Green Village for their tireless care and love. Larry was grateful to call Rolling Green his "home away from home."
